📖 Commentary of Surah Taha – Verse 72

They said, we shall never prefer you against these clear evidences [92] that came to us, by our Creator. Do whatever you have to do. [93] You will do in the life of this world only.

✅ [92] The Magicians’ Realisation of Truth

The magicians deeply reflected: Even if Musa’s staff were magic, where did all our ropes and staffs go? His staff had swallowed them all, yet its weight had not increased at all.

From this, we learn that knowledge—even if it begins in the wrong path—can become a means of guidance.
The magicians, through their own understanding of magic, recognised the miracle of Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him) and thus embraced faith.

✅ [93] Courage Born of Faith

With just one blessed gaze from Hazrat Musa (peace be upon him), the magicians became believers, companions, and martyrs—all in a single day—fueled by love for their Prophet and his truth.

Their faith ignited unmatched bravery.
They said to Pharaoh:
“Do what you wish; we will not turn back from the truth.”
This shows that a believer’s heart is fearless when it is firm in faith.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha verse 72 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 71 which provides the complete commentary from verse 71 through 73.

(20:72) The magicians answered: “By Him Who has created us, we shall never prefer you to the Truth after manifest Signs have come to us.[49] So decree whatever you will. Your decree will pertain, at the most, to the present life of the world.

Ala-Maududi

(20:72) The magicians answered: “By Him Who has created us, we shall never prefer you to the Truth after manifest Signs have come to us.[49] So decree whatever you will. Your decree will pertain, at the most, to the present life of the world.

49. It may also be interpreted like this: It cannot be that we should prefer you to these plain signs which have come before us and to that Being Who has created us.

(72) They said, "Never will we prefer you over what has come to us of clear proofs and [over] He who created us.[842] So decree whatever you are to decree. You can only decree for this worldly life.

[842]- This phrase has also been interpreted as an oath, i.e., "...by Him who created us."
