📖 Commentary of Surah Ta-Ha – Verse 59

59. Musa said, 'your promise is for the day of festival [70] and that the people be assembled late after sunrise'? [71]

✅ 70. "The day of festival"

By this “festival” is meant the special fair organized by Pharaoh’s people, in which the public would gather for celebrations and festivities.

🔹 From this, we learn that attending the public gatherings of non-believers is permissible when required for a religious or Dawah-related purpose.
🔹 For instance, Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) attended the fair for a confrontation of truth vs. falsehood, and Hazrat Ibrahim (On whom be peace) once went to a temple to destroy idols.

✅ 71. "Be assembled late after sunrise"

This means there should be a public announcement for everyone to witness the event.
🔹 The timing should be mid-morning, when there is ample daylight so the miracle may be observed without any ambiguity.
🔹 Arabic has unique names for specific parts of the day, as detailed in classical tafsir works:

  • Fajr – Dawn

  • Sabah – Early morning

  • Ghadah – Approaching dawn

  • Bukrah – Early morning

  • Doha – Time of brightness (mid-morning)

  • Zaheerah – Midday

  • Dahwah – Post-lunch

  • Masah – Approaching evening

  • Rawah – Siesta time

  • Asr – Late afternoon

  • Aseel – Evening, close of day

  • Hajirah – Meridian

  • Isha Oola – Early night

  • Isha Akhirah – Late night

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Ta-Ha verse 59 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Taha ayat 57 which provides the complete commentary from verse 57 through 59.

(20:59) Moses said: “The appointment to meet you is on the Day of the Feast and let all people come together before noon.”[31]

Ala-Maududi

(20:59) Moses said: “The appointment to meet you is on the Day of the Feast and let all people come together before noon.”[31]

31. The object of Pharaoh was this: Once the sorcerers are able to transform the staffs and ropes into serpents, the entire effect of the miracle performed by Moses (peace be upon him) would disappear from the people’s minds. That was exactly to Moses’ (peace be upon him) advantage, who suggested that it was no good fixing an ordinary day or place for the purpose. The Day of the Feast was at hand. People would flock on that occasion from all corners of the empire. Therefore, the encounter should be held in the open so that all might witness it, and in the day time so that everyone should be able to see it clearly.

(59) [Moses] said, "Your appointment is on the day of the festival when the people assemble at mid-morning."[840]

[840]- So that the signs of Allāh would be seen clearly.
