The summary/theme of the surah Jumah

It is a Madani sura located in the twenty-eighth juz' thereof. Bani Israel were given the message and had the book of Allah, but failed to follow the guidance of Allah because they became too involved in hedonism (seeking pleasure).

Lesson learned from surah Jumah

  1. Those people who were given knowledge of the scriptures but did not take it on board, are like the donkey that carries a load that it cannot benefit from.  
  2. Those who claim to be the only Friends of Allāh are challenged to desire death if they are truthful. A true measure of one’s proximity to Allāh!  
  3. Those who know they have done good have no qualms about death.  
  4. The death we try to run from will eventually catch up with us; so let’s rectify and better our actions.  
  5. It is sinful to engage in worldly activities whilst unprepared for Jumu‘ah, once the adhān of Jumu‘ah is called.  
  6. The worship and obedience of Allāh is better than futility and business, though the latter has to be done when necessary.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

يُسَبِّحُ لِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ ٱلۡمَلِكِ ٱلۡقُدُّوسِ ٱلۡعَزِيزِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ
 Transliteration:( Yusabbihu lilaahi maa fis samaawaati wa maa fil ardil Malikil Quddoosil 'Azeezil Hakeem )

1. Whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth glorifies (1) Allah, the Sovereign, the Most Holy, the Most Honourable (2), the Wise.

هُوَ ٱلَّذِي بَعَثَ فِي ٱلۡأُمِّيِّـۧنَ رَسُولٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُزَكِّيهِمۡ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَإِن كَانُواْ مِن قَبۡلُ لَفِي ضَلَٰلٖ مُّبِينٖ
 Transliteration:( Huwal lazee ba'asa fil ummiyyeena Rasoolam min hum yatloo 'alaihim aayaatihee wa yuzakkeehim wa yu'allimuhumul Kitaaba wal Hikmata wa in kaanoo min qablu lafee dalaalim mubeen )

2. It is He Who raised (3) among the unlettered people a Messenger from among themselves, who recites (4) to them His Verses and purifies (5) them, and teaches them the Book and the Wisdom (6), although they were before that in clear error (7).

3. And also purifies and teaches (8) the others from among them who had not yet joined them. And He is the Most Honourable, the Wise (9).

 Transliteration:( Zaalika fadlul laahi yu'teehi many-yashaaa; wallaahu zul fadlil 'azeem )

4.That is Allah's Grace. He grants it to whom He Pleases. And Allah is Lord of immense Bounty.(10)

 Transliteration:( Masalul lazeena hum milut tawraata summa lam yahmiloohaa kamasalil himaari yah milu asfaaraa; bi'sa masalul qawmil lazeena kaazzaboo bi aayaatil laah; wallaahu laa yahdil qawmazzaalimeen )

5. They are like those who were given the Tauraat (11), but they did not observe (12) it. It is like an ass, which carries a load of books (13). Evil is the likeness of the people who reject (14) the verses of Allah; And Allah does not guide the unjust people (15).

 Transliteration:( Qul yaaa ayyuhal lazeena haadoo in za'amtum annakum awliyaaa'u lilaahi min doonin naasi fatamannawul mawta in kuntum saadiqeen )

6.Please declare: "O Jews, if you assert that you are the favourites of Allah to the exclusion (16) of the rest of mankind, then wish for death (17), if you u are truthful (18)".

8.Please declare: "The death from which you flee, will surely overtake (21) you. Then you shall be sent back to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you did (22)".

 Transliteration:( Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo izaa noodiya lis-Salaati miny yawmil Jumu'ati fas'aw ilaa zikril laahi wa zarul bai'; zaalikum khayrul lakum in kuntum ta'lamoon )

9..0 you who believe! When the call (23) is made for Salaatul Jumu'ah (24), then hasten (25) to the rememberance of Allah, and leave (26) aside business. That is better for you, if you know (27),

10.But when the Prayer (Salaah) is completed, then disperse (28) in the land and seek Allah's Grace (29), and remember Allah much, that you may prosper (30).
