The summary/theme of the surah Al-An'am:

 This Surah was revealed in the Holy City of Mecca, the emphasis in this chapter is on monotheism or the Oneness of God. Seventy times the name of God, Allah, is mentioned in this chapter, and idolatry and polytheism are strongly condemned.

Lesson learned from Al-An'am:

  1. Allāh sent many nations before us but when they disbelieved, He removed them and sent others.  
  2. Those who mock the punishments of Allāh will be faced with the same punishments they would mock at when warned of.  
  3. All things disputed in this world will become clear on the Day of Judgement.  
  4. Everyone believes in Allāh when faced with difficulties, but when that difficulty is lifted, becomes neglectful of Him.  
  5. If you try following the opinion of the majority of people on Earth, you’ll stray from the right path.  
  6. Leave all types of sin.  
  7. Allāh is best aware of whom to bestow with prophethood.  
  8. Don’t kill your offspring in fear of poverty; Allāh alone is the Sustainer. He sustains you and them.  
  9. When measuring and weighing, do not deceive people.  
  10.   The Qur’ān is blessed, and practicing upon it attracts the Mercy of Allāh.  
  11.  Whoever performs a single good deed, will be rewarded ten-fold, while a sin will only be recompensed for its like.  
  12. Allāh gave some of us a lower rank than others so that He may test us with what He gave us. 

Recitation   Benefits of surah Al-An'am:

  1. Our Beloved Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (A.S.) has said that if a person writes this Surah Anam using musk or saffron and then drinks it (i.e. puts the written surah in water for its writing to dissolve) for six consecutive days, that person will be blessed abundantly and will be free from all problems and ailments. He will not lose his health or fall sick & would remain safe from every kind of ache and pain.
  2. Whoso recites this Surat Al-Anam, the seventy thousand angels who came with it at the time of its descending, glorifying Allah, will pray for his forgiveness, and good fortune day and night upto the day of judgement.
  3. To seek fulfillment of legitimate desires pray a 4 rakat salat, in sets of 2 rakats, with Surat al Fatihah and surah An-am in each rakat, after the recitation of al Surah Al-Anam  say:
  4. YA KARIM YA KARIM YA KARIM
  5. YA AZIM YA AZIM YA AZIM
  6. YA AZAM MIN KULLI AZIM
  7. YA SAMI AL DU-A-I
  8. YA MAN LA TUGHAYYIRUTUL AYYAMU WAL LAYLI
  9. SALLI ALA MUHAMMADIN WA ALI MUHAMMAD
  10. WARHAM ZAFI WA FAQRI WA FAQATI WA MASKANATI
  11. FA INNAK ALAMU BIHA MINNI
  12. WA ANTA ALAMU HAJATI
  13. YA MAN RAHIMA SHAYKHA YAQUBA RADDA
  14. ALAYHI YUSUFA QURRATA AYNIHI
  15. YA MAN RAHIMA AYYUBA BADA HULULI BALA-IHI
  16. YA MAN RAHIMA MUHAMMADAN ALAYHI WA ALIHIS SALAMU
  17. WA MANIL YATIMA AWAHU
  18. WA NASARAHU ALA JABABIRATI QURAYSH WA TAWAGHITIHA WA AMKANAHU MIN HUM
  19. YA MUGHITHU YA MUGHITHU YA MUGHITHUNow beseech Allah to fulfill your legitimate desire, inshallah He would surely grant you what you want.
  20. Whoso recites surah An-am from the beginning upto taksibun, Allah would give him reward of the worship of forty thousand angels upto the day of judgement. The same reward is available to those who recite this surah in the morning.

بِسۡمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحۡمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ

 

بَدِيعُ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۖ أَنَّىٰ يَكُونُ لَهُۥ وَلَدٞ وَلَمۡ تَكُن لَّهُۥ صَٰحِبَةٞۖ وَخَلَقَ كُلَّ شَيۡءٖۖ وَهُوَ بِكُلِّ شَيۡءٍ عَلِيمٞ
Transliteration:( Badee'us samaawaati wal ardi annnaa yakoonu lahoo waladunw wa lam takul lahoo saahibatunw wa khalaqa kulla shain'inw wa Huwa bikulli shai'in 'Aleem )

101. The Originator of the heavens and the earth, how could He have a son whereas there is no woman (222), for Him and He has created everything (223) and He has knowledge of everything?

ذَٰلِكُمُ ٱللَّهُ رَبُّكُمۡۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ خَٰلِقُ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ فَٱعۡبُدُوهُۚ وَهُوَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَيۡءٖ وَكِيلٞ
Transliteration:( Zaalikumul laahu Rabbukum laaa ilaaha illaa huwa khaaliqu kulli shai'in fa'budooh; wa huwa 'alaa kulli shai'inw Wakeel )

102. This is Allah, your Lord. None is to be worshipped except He, the Creator of everything (224), Then worship Him only. And He is the Guardian over everything (225).

لَّا تُدۡرِكُهُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرُ وَهُوَ يُدۡرِكُ ٱلۡأَبۡصَٰرَۖ وَهُوَ ٱللَّطِيفُ ٱلۡخَبِيرُ
Transliteration:( Laa tudrikuhul absaaru wa Huwa yudrikul absaara wa huwal Lateeful Khabeer )

103. Eyes cannot comprehend (226). Him and all the eyes are under His comprehension. And it is He Who is the Innermost, All Aware.

قَدۡ جَآءَكُم بَصَآئِرُ مِن رَّبِّكُمۡۖ فَمَنۡ أَبۡصَرَ فَلِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَنۡ عَمِيَ فَعَلَيۡهَاۚ وَمَآ أَنَا۠ عَلَيۡكُم بِحَفِيظٖ
Transliteration:( Qad jaaa'akum basaaa'iru mir Rabbikum faman absara falinafsihee wa man 'amiya fa'alaihaa; wa maaa ana 'alaikum bihafeez )

104. Indeed, there have come to you eye-opener arguments (227). from your Lord. Then whosoever saw it, it is for his own good, and whosoever became blind, then it is for his own harm. And I am not a guardian over you (228).

وَكَذَٰلِكَ نُصَرِّفُ ٱلۡأٓيَٰتِ وَلِيَقُولُواْ دَرَسۡتَ وَلِنُبَيِّنَهُۥ لِقَوۡمٖ يَعۡلَمُونَ
Transliteration:( Wa kazaalika nusarriful Aayaati wa liyaqooloo darasta wa linubaiyinahoo liqawminy ya'lamoon )

105. And thus We variedly explain the signs that they (the infidels) may say: "You have studied" (229), and that We may make it clear over the people who have knowledge.

ٱتَّبِعۡ مَآ أُوحِيَ إِلَيۡكَ مِن رَّبِّكَۖ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَۖ وَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنِ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ
Transliteration:( ittabi' maaa oohiya ilaika mir Rabbika laaa ilaaha illaa Huwa wa a'rid 'anil mushrikeen )

106. Follow you what has been revealed to you (230) from your Lord. None is to be worshipped except Him, and turn your face away from the polytheists (231).

وَلَوۡ شَآءَ ٱللَّهُ مَآ أَشۡرَكُواْۗ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَٰكَ عَلَيۡهِمۡ حَفِيظٗاۖ وَمَآ أَنتَ عَلَيۡهِم بِوَكِيلٖ
Transliteration:( Wa law shaaa'al laahu maaa ashrakoo; wa maa ja'alnaaka 'alaihim hafeezanw wa maaa anta 'alaihim biwakeel )

107. And had Allah willed, they would not have committed polytheism(232). And We have not made you a custodian over them, nor are you an advocate over them (233).

وَلَا تَسُبُّواْ ٱلَّذِينَ يَدۡعُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ فَيَسُبُّواْ ٱللَّهَ عَدۡوَۢا بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٖۗ كَذَٰلِكَ زَيَّنَّا لِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ عَمَلَهُمۡ ثُمَّ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِم مَّرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَيُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا كَانُواْ يَعۡمَلُونَ
Transliteration:( Wa laa tasubbul lazeena yad'oona min doonil laahi fa yasubbul laaha 'adwam bighairi 'ilm; kazaalika zaiyannaa likulli ummatin 'amalahum summa ilaa Rabbihim marji'uhum fa yunabbi'uhum bimaa kaanoo ya'maloon )

108. And do not abuse whom they worship besides Allah, because they will abuse your Lord out of spite through their excessiveness and ignorance (234). Thus, We have made fair the deeds of every Ummah in their eyes. Then they have to return back towards their Lord, and He will tell them what they used to do.

وَأَقۡسَمُواْ بِٱللَّهِ جَهۡدَ أَيۡمَٰنِهِمۡ لَئِن جَآءَتۡهُمۡ ءَايَةٞ لَّيُؤۡمِنُنَّ بِهَاۚ قُلۡ إِنَّمَا ٱلۡأٓيَٰتُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِۖ وَمَا يُشۡعِرُكُمۡ أَنَّهَآ إِذَا جَآءَتۡ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ
Transliteration:( Wa aqsamoo billaahi jahda aimaanihim la'in jaaa'at hum Aayatul la yu'minunna bihaa; qul innamal Aayaatu 'indal laahi wa maa yush'irukum annahaaa izaa jaaa'at laa yu'minoon )

109. And they swear by Allah their oath (235), with utmost earnest that if there comes to them any signs then they would surely believe therein. Please declare: "The signs are with Allah" and what will make you realize is that when these signs would come, they will not believe therein (236).

وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفۡـِٔدَتَهُمۡ وَأَبۡصَٰرَهُمۡ كَمَا لَمۡ يُؤۡمِنُواْ بِهِۦٓ أَوَّلَ مَرَّةٖ وَنَذَرُهُمۡ فِي طُغۡيَٰنِهِمۡ يَعۡمَهُونَ
Transliteration:( Wa nuqallibu af'idatahum wa absaarahum kamaa lam yu'minoo biheee awwala marratinw wa nazaruhum fee tughyaanihim ya'mahoon (section 13, End Juz 7) )

110. And We shall keep confounded their hearts and their eyes as they did not believe therein at the first time (237). And We leave them to blindly in their wander about blindly in transgression.

Tawhid is highly emphasized in this Surah. It contains the basic principles of Tawhid. It provides beautiful descriptions of Allah's creative power. It criticizes Shirk and its manifestations.

The following Important points have been discussed in this Surah Al-Anam

  • in this universe, Allah's Oneness is the reality.
  • There is no foundation for polytheism.
  • Tawhid was preached by Prophet Ibrahim, peace be upon him. Other Prophets also preached it.
