📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 108

108. And do not insult those whom they invoke besides Allah, lest they insult Allah out of animosity without knowledge [234]. Thus, We have made the deeds of every community appear fair to them. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.

✅ [234] Instruction to Avoid Provocation and Its Context

Muslims used to speak against the idols of the disbelievers. In retaliation, the idol worshippers began speaking disrespectfully about Allah Almighty. At that point, this verse was revealed, commanding Muslims not to revile the idols in front of idolaters.

Ibn Amhbari reports that this verse was later abrogated by verses of Jihad, once Muslims gained enough strength to respond firmly when Allah was insulted. This view is supported by Khazin and Khazainul Irfaan.

Nonetheless, the Qur’an itself contains many verses rebuking Satan, idols, and the leaders of Quraish, such as “Verily you and that which you worship” (S37:V161) and “Ill-mannered, and moreover, his birth is faulty.” (S68:V13).

From this verse, a few important rulings are understood:

  1. If non-essential worship leads to rebellious backlash that can't be contained, it should be avoided.

  2. Lectures and sermons should not provoke such enmity that leads to violent or abusive response.

  3. If well-intentioned advice is feared to worsen the situation, it should be withheld.

  4. Stubbornness can lead to complete spiritual loss—the Makkans believed in Allah but still insulted Him due to their hostility toward the Prophet ﷺ.

Ibn-Kathir

108. And insult not those whom they worship besides Allah, lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge. Thus We have made fair seeming to each people its own doings; then to their Lord is their return and He shall inform them of all that they used to do.

The Prohibition of Insulting the False gods of the Disbelievers, So that they Do not Insult Allah

Allah prohibits His Messenger and the believers from insulting the false deities of the idolators, although there is a clear benefit in doing so. Insulting their deities will lead to a bigger evil than its benefit, for the idolators might retaliate by insulting the God of the believers, Allah, none has the right to be worshipped but He. `Ali bin Abi Talhah said that Ibn `Abbas commented on this Ayah ﴿6:108﴾; “They (disbelievers) said, `O Muhammad! You will stop insulting our gods, or we will insult your Lord.’ Thereafter, Allah prohibited the believers from insulting the disbelievers’ idols,

(lest they insult Allah wrongfully without knowledge.)” `Abdur-Razzaq narrated that Ma`mar said that Qatadah said, “Muslims used to insult the idols of the disbelievers and the disbelievers would retaliate by insulting Allah wrongfully without knowledge. Allah revealed,

(And insult not those whom they worship besides Allah.)” On this same subject — abandoning what carries benefit to avert a greater evil – it is recorded in the Sahih that the Messenger of Allah said,

«مَلْعُونٌ مَنْ سَبَّ وَالِدَيْه»

(Cursed is he who insults his own parents!) They said, “O Allah’s Messenger! And how would a man insult his own parents” He said,

«يَسُبُّ أَبَا الرَّجُلِ فَيَسُبُّ أَبَاهُ وَيَسُبُّ أُمَّهُ فَيَسُبُّ أُمَّه»

(He insults a man’s father, and that man insults his father, and insults his mother and that man insults his mother.) Allah’s statement,

(Thus We have made fair seeming to each people its own doings;) means, as We made fair seeming to the idolators loving their idols and defending them, likewise We made fair seeming to every previous nation the misguidance they indulged in. Allah’s is the most perfect proof, and the most complete wisdom in all that He wills and chooses.

(then to their Lord is their return,) gathering and final destination,

(and He shall then inform them of all that they used to do.) He will compensate them for their deeds, good for good and evil for evil.

(6:108) Do not revile those whom they invoke other than Allah, because they will revile Allah in ignorance out of spite. [72] For We have indeed made the deeds of every people seem fair to them.[73] Tlen, their return is to their Lord and He will inform them of what they have done.

Ala-Maududi

(6:108) Do not revile those whom they invoke other than Allah, because they will revile Allah in ignorance out of spite. [72] For We have indeed made the deeds of every people seem fair to them.[73] Tlen, their return is to their Lord and He will inform them of what they have done.

72. The Prophet (peace be on him) and his followers are admonished not to allow their proselytizing zeal to dominate them so that their polemics and controversial religious discussions either lead them to be offensive to the beliefs of non-Muslims or to abuse their religious leaders and deities. Far from bringing people closer to the Truth, such an attitude is likely to alienate them from it further.

73. Here we should bear in mind, as we have pointed out earlier, that God declares those things which take place as a result of the operation of the laws of nature to be His own acts, for it is He Who has rnade those laws. Whatever results from the operation of those laws, therefore, results from His command. Whenever God states that a certain act was His, the same might be described by humans as occurring in the natural course of things.

(108) And do not insult those they invoke other than Allāh, lest they insult Allāh in enmity without knowledge. Thus We have made pleasing to every community their deeds. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them about what they used to do.
