📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 106

106. Follow what has been revealed to you [230] from your Lord. None is to be worshipped except Him, and turn away from the polytheists [231].

✅ [230] Revelation Includes Both Qur’an and Hadith

This command refers to all forms of divine revelation—whether the explicit and preserved words of the Holy Qur’an or the concealed, divinely inspired teachings conveyed through Hadith Shareef.

Both are classified as revelation, and therefore, both are to be obeyed. This verse cannot be used to support the Chakraldwi claim which seeks to separate the Hadith from divine guidance. The verse upholds the status of both Qur’an and Hadith as revealed instructions from Allah.

✅ [231] Dealing with the Polytheists – Two Interpretations

This part of the verse instructs the Prophet ﷺ to turn away from the polytheists. Scholars offer two explanations:

  1. Temporary Forbearance: Initially, the Prophet ﷺ was told to refute but not confront the polytheists aggressively. Once the verses of Jihad were revealed, this instruction was abrogated and replaced with the command to engage in battle when required (as per Khazin and Baidzawi).

  2. Rejection of Their Views: Alternatively, it can mean that the Prophet ﷺ is being asked to disregard or reject the beliefs of the polytheists, without implying physical confrontation. In this case, the command remains permanent and unchanged.

Both interpretations emphasize divine strategy in dealing with opposition: first through patience, then through firm action when the time is right.

Ibn-Kathir

106. Follow what has been inspired (revealed) to you from your Lord, none has the right to be worshipped but He, and turn aside from the idolators. 107. Had Allah willed, they would not have taken others besides Him in worship. And We have not made you Hafiz over them nor are you set over them to dispose of their affairs.

The Command to Follow the Revelation

Allah commands His Messenger and those who followed his path,

(Follow what has been inspired to you from your Lord,) meaning, follow it, obey it and act according to it. What has been revealed to you from your Lord is the Truth, no doubt, and there is no deity worthy of worship except Him,

(and turn aside from the idolators) meaning, forgive them, be forbearing and endure their harm until Allah brings relief to you, supports you and makes you triumphant over them. Know — O Muhammad — that there is a wisdom behind misleading the idolators, and that had Allah willed, He would have directed all people to guidance,

(Had Allah willed, they would not have taken others besides Him in worship.) Allah’s is the perfect will and wisdom in all decrees and decisions, and He is never questioned about what He does, while they all will be questioned. Allah’s statement,

(And We have not made you Hafiz over them.) means, a watcher who observes their statements and deeds,

(Nor are you set over them to dispose of their affairs. ) or to control their provision. Rather, your only job is to convey, just as Allah said,

(So remind them, you are only one who reminds. You are not a dictator over them.) ﴿88:21-22﴾ and,

(Your duty is only to convey and on Us is the reckoning.) ﴿13:40﴾

(6:106) (O Muhammad!) Follow the revelation which has come to you from your Lord, other than Whom there is no god, and turn away from those who associate others with Allah in His divinity.

Ala-Maududi
