📖 Commentary of Surah Hud – Verse 20

"They are not causing fatigue in the earth [46], and besides Allah [47], they have no allies [48]. The punishment will be doubled for them [49]. They could neither hear [50] nor see."

✅ [46] Control Over the Disbelievers

This verse signifies that the disbelievers are under Allah's control even in this world, and He can punish them whenever He wishes, both in this life and the Hereafter.

✅ [47] Separation from Allah

The translation of DOONE as "separate" is appropriate, meaning they are separated from Allah, rendering them powerless, like an electric wire cut off from the power source. Only by connecting with Allah will they have true strength.

✅ [48] Helpers of the Believers

Allah has appointed many helpers for the believers, such as the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the Saints, and their good deeds. In contrast, the disbelievers have no allies. This highlights the support Allah provides for those who follow the truth.

✅ [49] Worse Punishment for Misguidance

The punishment for those who mislead others is worse than for those who are merely misguided. This is because the misleader not only goes astray but also leads others into error.

✅ [50] Loss of Ability to Hear and See the Truth

The verse also refers to the disbelievers who, through their rejection of the truth, make themselves spiritually blind and deaf—they have the physical faculties but choose not to hear or see the truth, much like someone who intentionally destroys their senses.

The tafsir of Surah Hud verse 20 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Hud ayat 18 which provides the complete commentary from verse 18 through 22.

(11:20) They had no power to frustrate Allah’s design in the earth,[24] nor did they have any protectors against Allah. Their chastisement will be doubled.[25] They were unable to hear, nor could they see.

Ala-Maududi

(11:20) They had no power to frustrate Allah’s design in the earth,[24] nor did they have any protectors against Allah. Their chastisement will be doubled.[25] They were unable to hear, nor could they see.

24. This, again, refers to what will happen in the next life.

25. They will suffer punishment for being in error and for misleading others and leaving behind a legacy of error and misguidance for coming generations. (Surah Al-Aaraf, ayat 38) note 30.

(20) Those were not causing failure [to Allāh] on earth, nor did they have besides Allāh any protectors. For them the punishment will be multiplied. They were not able to hear, nor did they see.[557]

[557]- They refused to listen to the truth or to perceive it.
