Quran-11:45 Surah Hud English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Wa naadaa noohur Rabbahoo faqaala Rabbi innabnee min ahlee wa inna wa'dakal haqqu wa Anta ahkamul haakimeen )

45. And Nuh called upon his Lord, said he, O my Lord my son too is of my family,(95), and no doubt, Your promise is true, and You are the Greatest of rulers. (96)

Surah Hud Ayat 45 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

95. This does not mean that Hazrat Nooh (On whom be peace) did not understand that by your family Allah Almighty meant believing men are part of the family but this should be attributed to the mercy of the speaker eg. the utterance of the speaker "the wealthy like you is carried on the jet black object". This is the proof of excessive mercy. In the word "my family" literal meaning is signified while in "he is not of your family" meaning of intent is signified.

96. In this utterance there is no supplication for the saving of Kanaan because he had already been drowned, thus saving him now is really meaningless. The purpose of it is to show that when my people ask me that since Kanaan was your family person, how come he has drowned? What reply do I have for this!

Ibn-Kathir

45. And Nuh called upon his Lord and said, “O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family! And certainly, Your promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges.” 46. He said: “O Nuh! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you should be one of the ignorant.” 47. Nuh said: “O my Lord! I seek refuge with You from asking You that of which I have no knowledge. And unless You forgive me and have mercy on me, I would indeed be one of the losers.”

A Return to the Story of the Son of Nuh and mentioning what transpired between Nuh and Allah concerning Him

This was a request for information and an inquiry from Nuh concerning the cirumstances of his son’s drowning.

﴿فَقَالَ رَبِّ إِنَّ ابُنِى مِنْ أَهْلِى﴾

(and said, “O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family!”) This means, “Verily, You promised to save my family and Your promise is the truth that does not fail. Therefore, how can he (my son) be drowned and You are the Most Just of the judges”

﴿قَالَ ينُوحُ إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ﴾

(He (Allah) said: “O Nuh! Surely, he is not of your family…”) This means, “He (your son) is not of those whom I promised to save. I only promised you that I would save those of your family who believe.” For this reason Allah said,

﴿وَأَهْلَكَ إِلاَّ مَن سَبَقَ عَلَيْهِ الْقَوْلُ مِنْهُمْ﴾

l(and your family except him against whom the Word has already gone forth.) ﴿11:40﴾ Thus, for his son, it had already been decreed that he would be drowned due to his disbelief and his opposition to his father, the Prophet of Allah, Nuh peace be upon him. Concerning Allah’s statement,

﴿إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ﴾

(Surely, he is not of your family;) meaning that he (Nuh’s son) was not among those whom Allah promised to save. `Abdur-Razzaq recorded that Ibn `Abbas said, “He was the son of Nuh, but he opposed him in deeds and intention.” `Ikrimah said in some of the modes of recitation it said here, (إِنَّهُ عَمِلَ عَمَلًا غَيْرَ صَالِحٍ) “Verily, he (Nuh’s son) worked deeds that were not righteous.”

(11:45) And Noah called out to his Lord, saying: ‘My Lord! My son is of my family. Surely Your promise is true,[47] and You are the greatest of those who judge.[48]

47. That is, You promised that You will save the members of my family from this calamity; so save my son for he is also a member of my family.

48. That is, You are the greatest of all rulers: therefore Your decision is final and there can be no appeal against it. And You are the best of all rulers: therefore all Your decisions are based on perfect knowledge and absolute justice.
