📖 Commentary of Surah Hud – Verse 49

"These are tidings of the unseen that We reveal to you. Neither you nor your people knew them before this [105]. So be patient. Indeed, the final outcome is for the righteous" [106].

✅ [105] Knowledge of the Unseen

This verse conveys that the tidings of the unseen revealed to Hazrat Nuh (peace be upon him) and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) were not known to them or their people before. Allah gave this knowledge directly to His messengers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) himself acknowledged that when Allah placed His mercy on his heart, everything became known to him, illustrating that this knowledge was divine and beyond human understanding.

✅ [106] Patience and the Final Outcome

The verse encourages patience, assuring that while both the pious and the sinful may receive worldly bounties, it is ultimately the righteous who will have the final, eternal reward in the Hereafter. The pious may face tests, but they will succeed with Allah’s guidance. The bounties of the Hereafter are also of different levels, granted according to the status of the pious. Believers of all kinds—whether Companions, Saints, or ordinary believers—will receive divine blessings in the Hereafter, each according to their faith and good deeds.

Ibn-Kathir

49. This is of the news of the Unseen which We reveal unto you; neither you nor your people knew it before this. So be patient. Surely, the (good) end is for those who have Taqwa.

The Explanation of These Stories is a Proof of the Revelation of Allah to His Messenger

Allah, the Exalted, says to His Prophet concerning these stories and their like,

(of the news of the Unseen) from the information of the unseen of the past. Allah revealed it to you (the Prophet ) in the way that it occurred, as if he witnessed it himself.

(which We reveal unto you;) This means, “We teach it to you (Muhammad) as revelation from Us to you.”

(neither you nor your people knew it before this.) This means that neither you (Muhammad ) nor anyone of your people, have any knowledge of this. This is so that no one who rejects you can say that you learned it from him. Rather, it was Allah Who informed you of it in conformity with the true situation (of the story), just as the Books of the Prophets who were before you testify to. Therefore, you should be patient with the rejection of your people and their harming you. For verily, We shall help you and surround you with Our aid. Then, We will make the (good) end for you and those who follow you in this life and the Hereafter. This is what We did with the Messengers when We helped them against their enemies.

(Verily, We will indeed make victorious Our Messengers and those who believe.) Allah also said,

(And, verily, Our Word has gone forth of old for Our servants, the Messengers, that they verily, would be made triumphant.) ﴿37:171-172﴾ Then, Allah says,

(So be patient. Surely, the (good) end is for those who have Taqwa.)

(11:49) We reveal to you these accounts of matters that are beyond the reach of human perception. Neither you nor your people knew about them before this. Be, then, patient. Surely, the good end is for the God-fearing.[53]

Ala-Maududi

(11:49) We reveal to you these accounts of matters that are beyond the reach of human perception. Neither you nor your people knew about them before this. Be, then, patient. Surely, the good end is for the God-fearing.[53]

53. That is, you and your companions will come out successful at the end of the conflict just as Prophet Noah (peace be upon him) and his companions did. For this is the divine law that those who exert for the right cause, avoiding erroneous ways for fear of Allah, should come out successful in the end, even though they should meet with failures in the beginning of the conflict at the hands of the enemies of the truth. Therefore you should patiently bear the afflictions which you are suffering and stand steadfast against the obstacles you are encountering in the way, and you should not be in the least disheartened by the painful and superficial successes of your enemies. If you practice fortitude, you will come out successful in the end like Noah and his companions.
