📖 Commentary of Surah Hud – Verse 28

"He said, 'O my people! Consider this: if I am on a clear proof from my Lord, and He has granted me a mercy from Himself [62], and it is made obscure to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it [63]?"

✅ [62] Prophethood as a Mercy from Allah

This verse highlights that prophethood is not attained through personal merit or good deeds, but through the special mercy and bounty of Allah Almighty. This mercy is often granted through the prayers of previous Prophets, such as Hazrat Haroon and Hazrat Lut (peace be upon them), who were granted prophethood as part of Allah’s divine will and plan.

✅ [63] Two Key Points

  1. The purpose of a miracle is not to force people to accept faith, but to establish the truth of the Prophet’s message. If forcing faith were the goal, the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who had the power to make stones recite the Kalima, would have compelled disbelievers like Abu Jahl to accept Islam. The goal of miracles is to provide clear evidence, not to force acceptance. Similarly, the purpose of holy war is to weaken the power of infidelity, not to spread Islam through force.

  2. Faith is only accepted by those whose hearts are open and free from contempt for the Prophets and the teachings of Islam. Disgust and faith cannot coexist in the same heart. A person’s heart must be receptive to the truth in order to embrace faith.

Ibn-Kathir

28. He said: “O my people! Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord, and a mercy (prophethood) has come to me from Him, but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight. Shall we compel you (to accept) it when you have a strong hatred for it

The Response of Nuh

Allah says, informing about the response of Nuh to his people,

﴿أَرَأَيْتُمْ إِن كُنتُ عَلَى بَيِّنَةٍ مِّن رَّبِّى﴾

(Tell me, if I have a clear proof from my Lord,) Bayyinah means certainty, a clear matter, and truthful prophethood. That is the greatest mercy from Allah upon him (Nuh) and them (his people).

﴿فَعُمِّيَتْ عَلَيْكُمْ﴾

(but that (mercy) has been obscured from your sight.) “Obscured from your sight” in this verse means, `it was hidden from you and you are not guided to it. Thus, you ﴿people﴾ did not know its importance so you hastily rejected and denied it.’

﴿أَنُلْزِمُكُمُوهَا﴾

(Shall we compel you (to accept) it) This means, “Should we force you to accept it, while you actually detest it.”

(11:28) Noah said: ‘My people! If I base myself on a clear evidence from my Lord, and I have also been blessed by His mercy[34] to which you have been blind, how can we force it upon you despite your aversion to it?

Ala-Maududi

(11:28) Noah said: ‘My people! If I base myself on a clear evidence from my Lord, and I have also been blessed by His mercy[34] to which you have been blind, how can we force it upon you despite your aversion to it?

34. This is the same thing that has been put into the mouth of the Prophet (peace be upon him) in (Surah Hud, Ayat 17). That is, At first I recognized the reality of Tauhid by observing keenly the signs of God in the universe and in my own self. Then the same was confirmed by revelation to me. This shows that all the Prophets acquired the knowledge of the Unseen by observation and contemplation. Then Allah blessed them with the actual knowledge of the same at the time of their appointment as Prophets.

(28) He said, "O my people, have you considered: if I should be upon clear evidence from my Lord while He has given me mercy from Himself but it has been made unapparent to you, should we force it upon you while you are averse to it?
