📖 Commentary of Surah Hud – Verse 24

"The example of the two groups is like the blind and the deaf compared to the seeing and the hearing [54]. Are the two equal in comparison [55]? Will you not then take heed?"

✅ [54] The Blind and the Deaf vs. the Seeing and the Hearing

This verse draws a comparison between two groups: one represented by the blind and the deaf, and the other by the seeing and the hearing. The verse illustrates the fundamental difference between those who reject faith and those who accept it, likening the former to being spiritually blind and deaf, while the latter are spiritually aware and responsive to the truth of Allah’s guidance. This is explained further in relation to the verse from Surah An-Naml (S27:V80-81), which highlights the inability to guide the spiritually dead or blind.

✅ [55] The Difference in Status

Though the deaf may seem like someone who can hear and the dumb may seem like someone who can speak, in reality, they are fundamentally different. Similarly, while a Prophet and a common person may appear physically similar, their status is entirely different. The Prophet holds a unique spiritual and divine position, while a common person does not have the same connection or responsibility in terms of guiding others. This emphasizes the distinction in spiritual awareness and responsibility between the two groups.

Please refer to Surah Hud ayat 23 which provides the complete commentary from verse 23 through 24.

(11:24) The example of the two parties is that one is blind and deaf, and the other capable of seeing and hearing. Can the two be equals?[28] Will you, then, not heed?’

Ala-Maududi

(11:24) The example of the two parties is that one is blind and deaf, and the other capable of seeing and hearing. Can the two be equals?[28] Will you, then, not heed?’

28. Can the attitude and ultimate end of both these types of people be the same? Obviously, he who fails to see the right way and ignores the instruction of the guide who directs him to the right way will necessarily stumble and meet with some terrible mishap. However, he who perceives the right way and follows the instructions of his guide will reach his destination, and reach it safely.

The same difference is found between the two parties mentioned here. One of these carefully observes the realities of the universe and pays heed to the teachings of God’s Messengers. The other party, however, neither uses their eyes properly to perceive God’s signs nor pays heed to His Messengers. The behavior of the two parties is, therefore, bound to be different. And when their behavior is different, there is no reason to believe that their ultimate end will be identical.

(24) The example of the two parties is like the blind and deaf, and the seeing and hearing. Are they equal in comparison? Then, will you not remember?
