"Then are they waiting [266] for anything except for the likes of the days that have passed [267] before them? Say, 'Then wait, indeed I am with you among those who wait [268].'" (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
This verse mocks the disbelievers’ attitude, as if they were anticipating Divine punishment like the nations before them. However, the Makkan polytheists did not truly believe they deserved punishment, nor were they awaiting it. This rhetorical style was common in Arab discourse, serving as a warning that their arrogance mirrors past destroyed nations.
The "days that have passed" refer to the destruction of past rebellious nations—such as the people of Nuh (Noah), Lut (Lot), and Thamud—due to their sins. The verse establishes analogical justice: since the Makkan disbelievers committed similar corruption and denial, they too are worthy of punishment. Allah’s Sunnah (Divine law) remains consistent—rebellion invites retribution.
When the Prophet (PBUH) says, "I am with you among those who wait," it carries two meanings:
A Challenge: If they insist on persisting in disbelief, let them face the consequences.
A Promise: The believers will be saved just as past prophets and their followers were—either through victory, martyrdom, or Divine protection (e.g., Nuh in the Ark, Lut’s rescue from Sodom). For a believer, even death is a blessing, as it leads to eternal reward. Thus, there is no contradiction in the verse—Allah’s justice spares the righteous while punishing the wicked.
