📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 78

"They said, 'Have you come to us so that you may divert us from what we found our forefathers following [212], and that you may gain power in the land? But we do not believe you [213].'" (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

[212] Worship of Pharaoh and Idols

The disbelievers, led by Pharaoh, had adhered to the worship of idols and obedience to Pharaoh himself. Their rejection of Hazrat Musa’s (Alaihis Salaam) message was rooted in the belief that it threatened the status quo of their established practices and the power Pharaoh had over them.

[213] Two Points of Learning

  1. Suspicion Against the Prophet: The verse teaches that casting suspicion on a Prophet is a form of infidelity. The people of Pharaoh falsely accused Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) of using his prophethood as a way to gain worldly power over Egypt. This mirrors the deceitful claims of individuals like Mirza Qadyani, who used false prophethood for personal gain, exploiting the trust of followers for worldly success.

  2. Reliance on Intelligence Over Prophethood: The verse also reveals that it is infidelity to place trust in one’s own intellect or knowledge over the Prophet's teachings. The disbelievers only accepted the truth when it was too late, demonstrating that belief in the Prophet’s words is paramount. Their late acceptance after the punishment had already come was not accepted.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Yunus verse 78 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yunus ayat 75 which provides the complete commentary from verse 75 through 78.

(10:78) They replied: ‘Have you come to turn us away from the way of our forefathers that the two of you might become supreme in the land?[76] We shall never accept what the two of you say.’

Ala-Maududi

(10:78) They replied: ‘Have you come to turn us away from the way of our forefathers that the two of you might become supreme in the land?[76] We shall never accept what the two of you say.’

76. It is obvious that if this demand had been merely for the liberation of the Israelites, there could have been no question of any threat to Pharaoh’s kingdom. The threat was because of the message which demanded subordination to the truth, for it threatened the system which was based on shirk and on which depended the domination of Pharaoh and his chiefs and priests. See (Surah Al-Aaraf, ayat 83) note 66 and (Surah Al-Ghafir, ayat 26) note 43.

(78) They said, "Have you come to us to turn us away from that upon which we found our fathers and so that you two may have grandeur in the land? And we are not believers in you."
