📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 74

"Then after him We sent other messengers [205] to their people. They brought clear proofs to them, but they were not to believe in what they had previously denied [206]. Thus, We seal the hearts of the transgressors [207]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

[205] The Spread of Infidelity and Polytheism

After the time of Hazrat Nuh (Alaihis Salaam), only the believing children remained. However, as time passed, infidelity and polytheism began to spread among them due to the influence of the devil. In response, Allah sent Prophets like Hazrat Saleh, Hazrat Hud, and Hazrat Ibrahim (on them be peace). Hazrat Ibrahim is the seventh Prophet after Hazrat Adam, followed by Hazrat Shaith, Hazrat Idrees, and others. His progeny continued the mission of Prophethood, forming the Ebrahimi line.

[206] Continuous Rejection of Prophets

The verse highlights that after rejecting one Prophet, the people continued to reject others without believing in any of them. This reflects their persistent denial of divine truth and guidance, resulting in their spiritual downfall.

[207] Sealing of Hearts

The verse teaches that if a heart is devoid of love and respect for the Prophets, it becomes sealed. In such a heart, no guidance will have any effect, and it will remain lost in disbelief. This shows the importance of accepting and following the Prophets for spiritual guidance and salvation.

Ibn-Kathir

74. Then after him We sent Messengers to their people. They brought them clear proofs, but they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand. Thus We seal the hearts of the transgressors.

Meaning; Then after Nuh We sent Messengers to their people.

They brought them clear proofs. and evidences of the truth that they came with.

﴿فَمَا كَانُواْ لِيُؤْمِنُواْ بِمَا كَذَّبُواْ بِهِ مِن قَبْلُ﴾

(But they would not believe what they had already rejected beforehand) meaning the nations did not believe what their Messengers brought to them because they already rejected it from the beginning. Allah said:

﴿وَنُقَلِّبُ أَفْئِدَتَهُمْ وَأَبْصَـرَهُمْ﴾

(And We shall turn their hearts and their eyes away (from guidance).) (6:110) He then said here,

﴿كَذَلِكَ نَطْبَعُ عَلَى قُلوبِ الْمُعْتَدِينَ﴾

(Thus We seal the hearts of the transgressors.) This means that as Allah has set seals on the hearts of those people, such that they would not believe since they previously rejected faith, He would also set seals on the hearts of the people that are like them, who will come after them. They would not believe until they see the severe torment. This means that Allah destroyed the nations after Nuh. He destroyed the nations that rejected the Messengers and saved those who believed from among them. From the time of Adam to Nuh, people followed Islam. Then they invented the worship of idols. So Allah sent Nuh to them. That is why the believers will say to him on the Day of Resurrection, “You are the first Messenger Allah sent to the people of the earth.” Ibn `Abbas said: “There were ten generations between Adam and Nuh, and all of them were following Islam.” Allah also said:

﴿وَكَمْ أَهْلَكْنَا مِنَ الْقُرُونِ مِن بَعْدِ نُوحٍ﴾

(And how many generations have We destroyed after Nuh!) (17:17) This was a serious warning to the Arab pagans, who rejected the leader and last of the Messengers and Prophets. If the people before them who rejected their Messengers had received this much punishment, then what did they think will happen to them since they perpetrated even greater sins than others before them

(10:74) Then We sent forth after him other Messengers, each one to his people. They brought to them clear signs, but they were not such as to believe in what they had rejected earlier as false. Thus do We seal the hearts of those who transgress.[71]

Ala-Maududi

(10:74) Then We sent forth after him other Messengers, each one to his people. They brought to them clear signs, but they were not such as to believe in what they had rejected earlier as false. Thus do We seal the hearts of those who transgress.[71]

71. The transgressors whose hearts are sealed are those obstinate and obdurate people who are so hardened against persuasion that they firmly and perversely adhere to the opinion they have once formed erroneously. As they themselves refuse to listen to counsel and admonition, Allah’s curse falls on them and they are deprived of the ability of ever coming to the right way.

(74) Then We sent after him messengers to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. But they were not to believe in that which they had denied before.[536] Thus We seal over the hearts of the transgressors.

[536]- i.e., the succeeding generations were persistent in disbelief.
