📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 9

"Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds [27], their Lord will guide them by their faith. Rivers will flow beneath them in the gardens of bliss [29]."

✅ [27] The Reward for Belief and Righteous Deeds

This verse emphasizes that those who believe and perform righteous deeds will be guided by Allah Almighty through their faith. It is noted that even those who die immediately after accepting Islam, as well as the minor children of the believers, will be granted entry into Paradise, despite not having had the opportunity to practice or carry out deeds. This reflects Allah’s mercy and the fact that these individuals did not have a chance to act on their faith. Similarly, companions like Hazrat Khadija and Hazrat Waraga bin Naufal (May Allah be pleased with them), who died before the full revelation of Islamic laws, are also inhabitants of Paradise.

✅ [28] Faith and Good Deeds as Entry into Paradise

This verse also suggests that the inhabitants of Paradise will recognize their abode through guidance. Entry into Paradise will be based on faith, but the bounties within will be a result of righteous deeds and Allah's mercy. Furthermore, the vision of Allah Almighty and the company of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) in Paradise will be a special blessing and bounty, granted by Allah’s immense grace.

✅ [29] Rivers Flowing Beneath the Gardens of Paradise

The gardens of Paradise will have rivers of milk, honey, pure drinks, and water flowing beneath them. In addition to these, fast-flowing canals will run, creating an ever-refreshing and serene environment. The difference between a canal and a sea has been explained earlier, highlighting the beauty and clarity of the waters in Paradise compared to the vastness of the seas on earth.

Ibn-Kathir

9. Verily, those who believe and do deeds of righteousness, their Lord will guide them through their faith; under them will flow rivers in the Gardens of delight (Paradise). 10. Their way of request therein will be: “Glory to You, O Allah!” and “Salam” (peace, safety from evil) will be their greetings therein! And the close of their request will be: “All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all that exists.”

The Good Reward is for the People of Faith and Good Deeds

In these two Ayat, Allah promises the happy blessings for those who believed in Allah and His Messengers. And for those that have complied with what they were commanded to follow. The promise is that He will guide them because of their faith, or it may mean through their faith. As to the first interpretation, the meaning is that Allah will guide them on the Day of Resurrection to the straight path until they pass into Paradise because of their faith in this world. The other meaning is that their faith will assist them on the Day of Resurrection as Mujahid said:

﴿يَهْدِيهِمْ رَبُّهُمْ بِإِيمَانِهِمْ﴾

(Their Lord will guide them through their faith) meaning “Their faith will be a light in which they will walk.”

(Their way of request therein will be: “Glory to You, O Allah!” And Salam (peace, safety from evil) will be their greetings therein! And the close of their request will be: “All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all that exists.”) meaning this is the condition of the people of Paradise. This is similar to what is found in the following Ayat:

﴿تَحِيَّتُهُمْ يَوْمَ يَلْقَوْنَهُ سَلَـمٌ﴾

(Their greeting on the Day they shall meet Him will be “Salam ﴿Peace﴾!”) ﴿33:44﴾,

(No Laghw (dirty, false, evil vain talk) will they hear therein, nor any sinful speech. But only the saying of: Salam! Salam!!”) ﴿56:25-26﴾,

((It will be said to them): “Salam” — a Word from the Lord, Most Merciful.) ﴿36:58﴾,

(And angels shall enter unto them from every gate (saying): “Salamun `Alaykum (peace be upon you)!”) ﴿13:23-24﴾ In Allah’s statement,

(And the close of their request will be: All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all that exists.”) There is an indication that Allah Almighty is the Praised One always, the Worshipped at all times. This is why He praised Himself at the beginning and the duration of His creation. He also praised Himself in the beginning of His Book and the beginning of its revelation. Allah said:

(All the praises and thanks be to Allah, Who has sent down to His servant the Book (the Qur’an).) ﴿18:1﴾,

(All praise is due to Allah, Who (alone) created the heavens and the earth,) ﴿6:1﴾, and many other citations with this meaning. The Ayah also indicates that Allah is the Praised One in this world and in the Hereafter and in all situations. In a Hadith recorded by Muslim:

«إِنَّ أَهْلَ الْجَنَّةِ يُلْهَمُونَ التَّسْبِيحَ وَالتَّحْمِيدَ كَمَا يُلْهَمُونَ النَّفَس»

(The people of Paradise will be inspired to glorify Allah and praise Him as they instinctively breath.) This will be their nature because of the increasing bounties of Allah upon them. These bounties are repeated and brought back again and increased with no limit or termination. So praise be to Allah for there is no God but He and no Lord save He.

(10:9) Surely those who believe (in the truths revealed in the Book) and do righteous deeds their Lord will guide them aright because of their faith. Rivers shall flow beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss.[13]

Ala-Maududi

(10:9) Surely those who believe (in the truths revealed in the Book) and do righteous deeds their Lord will guide them aright because of their faith. Rivers shall flow beneath them in the Gardens of Bliss.[13]

13. We should not pass cursorily over this verse and should consider it deeply in the order it has been presented:

(1) Why will they be given Gardens of delight in the life of the Hereafter? This will be because they followed the right way in the life of this world and adopted the right ways in every aspect of life, both as individuals and as a community, and discarded the false and erroneous ways.

(2) How did they obtain at every step, at every turning and at every crossroad the correct criterion of judging between the right and the wrong, the true and the false, the righteous and the erroneous? Then from where did they get the power to remain steadfast on the right way, avoiding scrupulously wrong ways, after getting the right sort of discernment? It was their Lord Who is the real source of everything, Who gave them the guidance and the power of doing good works on every critical occasion.

(3) Why did their Lord give them that guidance and power? He gave them these things because of their faith.

(4) What is that characteristic of the faith which produces the above results? The faith which produces those results does not comprise mere profession but it is that faith which becomes the moving spirit of one’s conduct and character and has the power of reforming one’s morals and deeds.

In order to illustrate this point, let us consider, in the physical life of man, the case of food that is consumed for nourishment, health, energy and happiness. It is obvious that these results cannot be produced by the mere taking in of any food, but by that food which is so digested as turns into blood and circulates into every vein to provide energy to every part of the body for its proper functioning. In the same way, in the moral life, guidance, righteous attitude and pure conduct and true success, depend on those right creeds that get deeply embedded in the mind, heart and soul. Otherwise, creeds which are merely professed by the tongue or lie dormant in some corner of the mind and the heart cannot produce such results, for they cannot influence one’s conduct, character, way of thinking and attitude towards life for the better. Just as one may eat food and still not obtain those useful results which are produced only if it is digested properly according to the physical laws of God. In the same way, one who professes those right creeds merely with his tongue, but does not make them a part of his mind, heart and soul does not deserve those rewards which are only for those whose deeds correspond to the creeds.

(9) Indeed, those who have believed and done righteous deeds - their Lord will guide them because of their faith. Beneath them rivers will flow in the Gardens of Pleasure.
