📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 94

"If you are in some doubt regarding what We have sent down [251] to you, then ask those who recite the Book before [252] you. Indeed, the truth has come to you from your Lord [253]. Therefore, you will never be among those who doubt [254]."

✅ [251] Addressing Doubts about Divine Revelation

This verse addresses the believers and encourages them to seek clarification if they have any doubts regarding the revelations sent to them. It advises them to ask the Jewish scholars, particularly those like Abdullah bin Salaam, who were well-versed in the scriptures and had already embraced faith in the Holy Prophet (PBUH). This highlights that the truth of Islam was verifiable through the knowledge of earlier scriptures.

✅ [252] The Readers of the Book

The phrase "readers of the Book" refers specifically to those Jewish scholars who believed in the Prophet (PBUH), such as Abdullah bin Salaam. These scholars could confirm the truth of the Prophet’s message because they had knowledge of the previous scriptures and recognized the signs of the coming Prophet. However, the majority of Jewish scholars were unwilling to accept and verify the truth about the Prophet.

✅ [253] The Truth from Allah

The "truth" in this verse refers to the Holy Prophet (PBUH), the Holy Qur'an, or the religion of Islam. The message revealed to the Prophet is the ultimate truth, which has come directly from Allah.

✅ [254] Avoiding Doubt and Imitating the Disbelievers

This part of the verse emphasizes that believers should not harbor any doubt about the truth of Islam, nor should they emulate the disbelievers in their appearance or manner of speech. The message is clear: to avoid doubt, and to remain firm in faith, one must align with the divine guidance and not follow the ways of those who reject it.

Ibn-Kathir

94. So if you are in doubt concerning that which We have revealed unto you, then ask those who are reading the Book before you. Verily, the truth has come to you from your Lord. So be not of those who doubt (it). 95. And be not one of those who belie the Ayat of Allah, for then you shall be one of the losers. 96. Truly, those, against whom the Word of your Lord has been justified, will not believe. 97. Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment.

Previous books Attest to the Truth of the Qur’an

Allah said:

(Those who follow the Messenger, the Prophet who can neither read nor write whom they find written of with them in the Tawrah and the Injil.)(7:157) They are as certain of this as they are about who their children are, yet they hide it and distort it. They did not believe in it despite its clear evidence. Therefore Allah said:

(Truly, those, against whom the Word (wrath) of your Lord has been justified, will not believe. Even if every sign should come to them, until they see the painful torment.) meaning they would not believe in a way that they might benefit from that belief. This is when they believe at a time one may not be able to benefit from his belief. An example is when Musa prayed against Fir`awn and his chiefs, saying:

(Our Lord! Destroy their wealth, and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful torment.)(10:88) And Allah said:

(And even if We had sent down unto them angels, and the dead had spoken unto them, and We had gathered together all things before their very eyes, they would not have believed, unless Allah willed, but most of them behave ignorantly.) (6:111) Allah then said:

(10:94) Now, if you are in doubt concerning what We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Book before you. It is the truth that has come to you from your Lord, so do never become one of those who doubt,

Ala-Maududi

(10:94) Now, if you are in doubt concerning what We have revealed to you, then ask those who have been reading the Book before you. It is the truth that has come to you from your Lord, so do never become one of those who doubt,
