Transliteration:( Ilaihi marji'ukum jamee 'anw wa'dal laahi haqqaa; innahoo yabda'ul khalqa thumma yu'eeduhoo liyajziyal lazeena aamanoo wa 'amilus saalihaati bilqist; wallazeena kafaroo lahum sharaabun min hamee minw wa 'azaabun 'aleemun bimaa kaanoo yakfuroon )
"To Him is your return, all of you. This is the true promise [12] of Allah. Indeed, He initiates creation and then repeats it, so that He may justly reward those who believe [13] and do righteous deeds [14]. But for those who disbelieve, they will have a boiling drink [15] and a painful punishment [16] because they disbelieved."
Because the actual purpose of Qiyamah (the Day of Judgment) is to reward those who have performed good deeds, this verse is referred to as the pay of Promise. The purpose of this is to instill fear about the consequences of actions, highlighting the seriousness of the Day of Judgment and the reward/punishment that will follow.
It should be remembered that justice will be meted out to both the believers and the disbelievers. However, in addition to justice, the believers will receive bounty. Entering Paradise, enjoying its delicacies, etc., are due to justice, but being blessed with Divine Vision is an additional gift out of Allah’s bounty. Even in the grave, the believers will experience blessings from Allah, as this is an extension of the bounty granted by Allah for their faith.
This refers to the pious who have done justice in this world by obeying Allah Almighty. They will be rewarded for their actions. Or, it could mean that Allah Almighty will reward them justly, without decreasing their rewards nor increasing their punishment. This type of justice is not in contradiction with mercy, but it contrasts with tyranny, where the reward or punishment is distorted.
From this, it is understood that boiling water, a mixture of blood and pus, and painful punishment are reserved only for the disbelievers. Sinful Muslims will be protected from these severe punishments, as they are part of the consequences faced by those who reject faith.
There is also a hint in this verse that the deceased minor children of the disbelievers will not be punished because they did not commit infidelity. Allah’s mercy will cover them, as they are not accountable for the actions of their parents or for the rejection of faith that they did not have the capacity to understand or reject.
4. To Him is the return of all of you. The promise of Allah is true. It is He Who begins the creation and then will repeat it, that He may reward with justice those who believed and did deeds of righteousness. But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and painful torment because they used to disbelieve.
Allah tells us that the return of the creatures on the Day of Resurrection is to Him. He will not leave anyone of them without bringing everyone into being as He brought them in the beginning. Then Allah states that He is going to bring all the creatures into being.
(And He it is Who originates the creation, then He will repeat it (after it has perished); and this is easier for Him.) (30:27),
(that He may reward with justice those who believed and did deeds of righteousness.) meaning, the reward will be with justice and complete recompense.
(But those who disbelieved will have a drink of boiling fluids and painful torment because they used to disbelieve.) meaning, because of their disbelief they will be punished on the Day of Resurrection by different forms of torment, such as fierce hot winds, boiling water, and the shadow of black smoke.
(This is so! Then let them taste it; a boiling fluid and dirty wound discharges. And other (torments) of similar kind all together!) (38: 57-58)
(This is the Hell which the criminals denied. They will go between it (Hell) and the fierce boiling water!) (55:43-44)
(10:4) To Him is your return.[8] This is Allah’s promise that will certainly come true. Surely it is He Who brings about the creation of all and He will repeat it[9] so that He may justly reward those who believe and do righteous deeds; and that those who disbelieve may have a draught of boiling water and suffer a painful chastisement for their denying the truth.[10]
8. This is the second basic principle of the teachings of every prophet; “You shall have to return to your Lord and render an account of all you did in this world.” The first principle has been stated in the preceding verse: Allah alone is your Lord: therefore worship only Him.
9. This sentence contains both a statement and its proof. The statement is, “Allah will again bring to life all human beings,” and the proof is, “This is as easy for Allah as it was to create them the first time.” The one who acknowledges that Allah has originated all creation (and who can deny this except those atheists who accepted the absurd theory of “creation without a creator” merely to get a plea for discarding the religion of the Christian clergy?) cannot consider this as impossible or irrational.
10. The reason why Allah will again bring the whole mankind to life is to reward the believers and to punish the disbelievers. After showing that this is possible to raise the dead, it is stated that it is absolutely necessary to fulfill the demands of common sense and justice, for full justice cannot be done without this. Common sense and justice demand that those who believe and do righteous deeds should be given their full rewards, and those who disbelieve and reject the truth and do evil deeds, should be duly punished. As every sensible and just person knows that this demand of justice is not fulfilled in its entirety, and cannot be fulfilled, in this world. It is absolutely essential that the entire mankind should again be brought to life for this purpose. See also (Surah Al-Aaraf, ayat 38) note 30 and (Surah Hud, ayat 103) note 105.
