📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 47

"And for every nation there has been a Messenger [137]. When their Messenger came to them, it was judged between them with justice [138], and they were not wronged." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

[137] The Sending of Messengers to Every Nation

This refers to those nations upon whom punishment had been sent in the world. Allah Almighty never destroyed any people without sending a Prophet to them first. The commentary of this verse is the following verse: "And We are not to torment until We have sent a Messenger" (S17:V15). Therefore, those people who lived in nature, to whom no Prophets were sent, were not punished in this world. It is also important to note that Prophets were always from noble and sublime families (Bukhari Shareef), while common people followed them. This verse does not mean that every Prophet was sent only to his own people. The Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), though born a Hashimite, was sent as a Prophet to the entire creation.

[138] The Justice and Mercy of the Prophets

The coming of the Prophets is a means of mercy to the fortunate and a punishment to the wretched. This is similar to how the rising of the sun causes hardship for the bat, or how the rain may destroy some fruits and vegetation. The message of the Prophets serves as guidance and mercy for those who accept it, but for those who reject it, it is a form of punishment.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Yunus verse 47 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yunus ayat 46 which provides the complete commentary from verse 46 through 47.

(10:47) A Messenger is sent to every people;[55] and when their Messenger comes, the fate of that people is decided with full justice; they are subjected to no wrong.[56]

Ala-Maududi

(10:47) A Messenger is sent to every people;[55] and when their Messenger comes, the fate of that people is decided with full justice; they are subjected to no wrong.[56]

55. Here the word ummat does not merely mean a nation or a community but includes all those people whom the message of a Messenger reaches after his appointment, even though he may not be alive among them. More than this: as long as his teachings remain intact and within the reach of everyone to ascertain what they really are, all such people will be treated and judged as his ummat and their cases decided with justice in accordance with (Surah Yunus, ayat 47). According to this standard, all the people of the world are the ummat of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), and will remain so, as long as the Quran continues to be published in its original and complete form as today. That is why it has not been said, “There is a Messenger in every ummat” but “There is a Messenger for every ummat.”

56. That is, when the message of a Messenger reaches a people, they should know that henceforth they are on trial and that no excuse would be accepted that they were ignorant of it. Then judgment is passed on them with scrupulous justice. Those, who accept the message and mend their way in accordance with it, are declared to be worthy of Allah’s blessings, and those who reject it are doomed to a torment that may be inflicted both in this world and in the next world or only in the Hereafter.

(47) And for every nation is a messenger. So when their messenger comes,[526] it will be judged between them in justice, and they will not be wronged.

[526]- To witness on the Day of Judgement. Another meaning is "Once a messenger has come [to them in this world]..."
