27. And those who earn evil [81], the retribution for an evil deed is its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them [82]. They will have no protector against Allah [83]; it will be as if their faces are covered with patches of the dark night [84]. It is they who are the inhabitants of Hell, to dwell therein forever [85]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(27) But they who have earned [blame for] evil doings - the recompense of an evil deed is its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them. They will have from Allāh no protector. It will be as if their faces are covered with pieces of the night - so dark [are they]. Those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide therein eternally. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 27

"And those who earn evil [81], the retribution for an evil deed is its equivalent, and humiliation will cover them [82]. They will have no protector against Allah [83]; it will be as if their faces are covered with patches of the dark night [84]. It is they who are the inhabitants of Hell, to dwell therein forever [85]."

✅ [81] Evil Signifies Defects in Beliefs

In this verse, evil refers to defects in beliefs, not just in deeds. The punishment described is for the disbelievers, who reject Allah's guidance and live in a state of infidelity. A believer may commit sins, but these do not make them an infidel. The focus here is on the fundamental rejection of faith, which leads to the severe consequences described in the verse.

✅ [82] The Reflection of the Heart in the Face

The humiliation that will cover the faces of the disbelievers reflects the condition of their hearts. Just as certain illnesses manifest on a person’s face, the spiritual sickness of the disbelievers—rejection of faith—will be visible on their faces on the Day of Judgment. The humiliation will be evident, marking them for their misdeeds and disbelief.

✅ [83] The Absence of Protectors for the Disbelievers

The verse emphasizes that the disbelievers will have no protectors or saviors against Allah's punishment. Unlike the believers, who will be aided by Prophets, pious individuals, saints, and Islamic scholars on the Day of Judgment, the disbelievers will face their fate alone. This absence of support is a significant part of their punishment.

✅ [84] Distinguishing Faces on the Day of Judgment

On the Day of Judgment, both believers and disbelievers will be recognized by their faces. The faces of the disbelievers will be darkened as a mark of their rejection of Allah's truth. The believers, on the other hand, will be recognized by their radiant faces. Allah Almighty says in S55:V41, "The culprits shall be recognized by their faces", and in S3:V106, "When some faces will be bright and some will be dark." This distinction will be clear, and even the Holy Prophet (PBUH) will recognize those who turned away from Islam.

✅ [85] The Eternal Fate of the Disbelievers

The disbelievers will have blackened faces on the Day of Judgment, symbolizing their eternal punishment in Hell. The sinners among the believers may have dust or other marks on their faces as signs of their imperfections, but they will not be in Hell forever. Misers and those who failed to show justice, for example, will carry signs on their bodies, like a black serpent representing their misdeeds. Ultimately, the disbelievers will remain in Hell forever, facing the consequences of their disbelief and rejection of Allah's signs.

Ibn-Kathir

27. And those who have earned evil deeds, the recompense of an evil deed is the like thereof, and humiliating disgrace will cover them (their faces). No defender will they have from Allah. Their faces will be covered as it were with pieces from the darkness of night. They are the dwellers of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.

The Reward of the Wicked Criminals

After Allah told us about the state of those happy people who have done right and He promised increase in reward, He continued to tell us about the unlucky, miserable ones. He told us about His justice with them. He will reward them with similar evil, without any increase

(and will cover them) meaning that their faces will be covered and overtaken by humiliation because of their sins and their fear from these sins. Similarly Allah said:

(And you will see them brought forward to it, (Hell) made humble by disgrace.)﴿42:45﴾ He also said:

﴿وَلاَ تَحْسَبَنَّ اللَّهَ غَـفِلاً عَمَّا يَعْمَلُ الظَّـلِمُونَ إِنَّمَا يُؤَخِّرُهُمْ لِيَوْمٍ تَشْخَصُ فِيهِ الأَبْصَـرُ مُهْطِعِينَ مُقْنِعِى رُءُوسِهِمْ﴾

(Consider not that Allah is unaware of that which the wrongdoers do, but He gives them respite up to a Day when the eyes will stare in horror. (They will be) hastening forward with necks outstretched, their heads raised up (towards the sky).)﴿14:42 – 43﴾ Allah then said:

﴿مَّا لَهُمْ مِّنَ اللَّهِ مِنْ عَاصِمٍ﴾

(No defender will they have from Allah.) meaning, there will be no protectors to prevent them from punishment as Allah said:

﴿يَقُولُ الإِنسَـنُ يَوْمَئِذٍ أَيْنَ الْمَفَرُّ – كَلاَّ لاَ وَزَرَ – إِلَى رَبِّكَ يَوْمَئِذٍ الْمُسْتَقَرُّ ﴾

(On that Day man will say: “Where (is the refuge) to flee” No! There is no refuge! Unto your Lord (alone) will be the place of rest that Day.)﴿75:10-12﴾ Allah’s statement:

﴿كَأَنَّمَا أُغْشِيَتْ وُجُوهُهُمْ﴾

(Their faces will be covered as it were…) means that their faces will be dark in the Hereafter. This is similar to His statement:

(On the Day (the Day of Resurrection) when some faces will become white and some faces will become black; as for those whose faces will become black (to them will be said): “Did you reject faith after accepting it Then taste the torment (in Hell) for rejecting faith.” And for those whose faces will become white, they will be in Allah’s mercy (Paradise), therein they shall dwell forever.)﴿3:106-107﴾ He also said:

﴿وُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ مُّسْفِرَةٌ – ضَـحِكَةٌ مُّسْتَبْشِرَةٌ – وَوُجُوهٌ يَوْمَئِذٍ عَلَيْهَا غَبَرَةٌ ﴾

(Some faces that Day will be bright, laughing, rejoicing at good news (of Paradise). And other faces that Day will be dust-stained. )﴿80:38-40﴾

(10:27) Those who do evil deeds, the recompense of an evil deed is its like,[34] and humiliation shall spread over them and there will be none to protect them from Allah. Darkness will cover their faces as though they were veiled with the dark blackness of night.[35] These are the people of the Fire and in it they shall abide.

Ala-Maududi

(10:27) Those who do evil deeds, the recompense of an evil deed is its like,[34] and humiliation shall spread over them and there will be none to protect them from Allah. Darkness will cover their faces as though they were veiled with the dark blackness of night.[35] These are the people of the Fire and in it they shall abide.

34. That is, in contrast to the additional rewards to the good people, those who earned evil deeds, shall be punished only in proportion to their crimes. See (Surah An-Naml, ayat 91) note 110.

35. It shall be that kind of gloom that overspreads the faces of the criminals when they are caught, and they despair all hopes of escape.
