"And when you are busy in any work [169], or you recite any part of the Quran from Him, and you perform any act, We are witnesses over you when you commence it [170]. And there is nothing hidden from your Lord even to an atom's weight in the earth or in the heaven. And there is nothing smaller [171], than that or greater, but it is in the Luminous Book [172]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
This verse refers to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), emphasizing that he is always under the attention and observation of Allah. It indicates that, at all times and in all circumstances, the Prophet (ﷺ) is in the divine sight of Allah, reinforcing the special connection between the Prophet and His Lord. As Allah says, "Indeed you are in our sight who sees you while you stand" (S52:V48).
The recitation of the Qur'an is highlighted as a blessed and important act. This verse also affirms that Allah witnesses every action and that if a person is mindful of Allah's watchful presence, they would refrain from committing any sin. Every act is witnessed by Allah, making mindfulness and consciousness of His presence essential for righteous living.
This verse underlines that everything, no matter how small or large, is recorded in the Divine Tablet. Every minute detail of creation is known to Allah and is part of His infallible knowledge. Allah mentions that the Qur'an contains the complete details of all things, as stated in S10:V37. The verse further affirms that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) has access to this divine knowledge, as revealed to him by Allah.
The verse also refers to the Luminous Book, where everything is recorded. The Divine Tablet is said to be "luminous" because it is made accessible to Allah's pious servants, revealing unseen knowledge to them. This ensures that all information is preserved and available to those who are granted insight by Allah.
61. Neither you do any deed nor recite any portion of the Qur’an, nor you do any deed, but We are Witness thereof when you are doing it. And nothing is hidden from your Lord (so much as) the weight of a speck of dust on the earth or in the heaven. Not what is less than that or what is greater than that but is (written) in a Clear Record.
Allah informed His Prophet that He knows and is well acquainted with all of the affairs and conditions of him and his Ummah and all of creation and its creatures at all times — during every hour and second. Nothing slips or escapes from His knowledge and observation, not even anything the weight of a speck of dust within the heavens or earth, or anything that is smaller or larger than that. Everything is in a manifest Book, as Allah said:
(And with Him are the keys of the Ghayb (all that is hidden and unseen), none knows them but He. And He knows whatever there is in the land and in the sea; not a leaf falls, but He knows it. There is not a grain in the darkness of the earth nor anything fresh or dry, but is written in a Clear Record.)(6:59) He stated that He is Well-Aware of the movement of the trees and other inanimate objects. He is also Well-Aware of all grazing beasts. He said:
(There is not a moving creature on earth, nor a bird that flies with its two wings, but are communities like you.) (6:38) He also said:
(And no moving creature is there on earth but its provision is due from Allah. )(11:6) If this is His knowledge of the movement of these things, then what about His knowledge of the movement of the creatures that are commanded to worship Him Allah said:
(And put your trust in the Almighty, the Most Merciful, Who sees you when you stand up, and your movements among those who fall prostrate.)(26:217-219) That is why Allah said:
(Neither you do any deed nor recite any portion of the Qur’an, nor you do any deed, but We are Witness thereof when you are doing it.) meaning, `We are watching and hearing you when you engage in that thing.’ When Jibril asked the Prophet about Ihsan, he said:
(It is that you worship Allah as if you are seeing Him. But since you do not see Him, be certain that He is watching you.)
(10:61) (O Prophet!) Whatever you may be engaged in, whether you recite any portion of the Qur’an, or whatever else all of you are doing, We are witnesses to whatever you may be occupied with. Not even an atom’s weight escapes your Lord on the earth or in the heaven, nor is there anything smaller or bigger than that, except that it is on record in a Clear Book.[64]
64. These things have been mentioned here in order to comfort the Prophet (peace be upon him) and give a warning to his enemies. These are meant to lessen his worry and to strengthen him, as if to say: We see all that you are doing in propagating the Message of the truth with great patience and fortitude, and exerting your utmost to reform mankind. Rest assured that We have not left you alone after entrusting you with this arduous duty. We are not unaware of whatever you are doing for the performance of your mission, and also whatever your enemies are doing to oppose you. On the other hand, a warning has also been administered to his opponents: Don’t remain under the delusion that no one is seeing what you are doing in opposing the Messenger of the truth and the reformer of mankind? We are seeing whatever mischief you are doing and whatever obstacles you are placing in the way of the mission. We are keeping a detailed and accurate record of all these things. Therefore beware that you shall be called upon to render an account of all your doings.
