Transliteration:( Wa Yawma yahshuruhum ka 'an lam yalbasooo illaa saa'atan minan nahaari yata'aarafoona bainahum; qad khasiral lazeena kazzaboo bi liqaaa'il laahi wa maa kaanoo muhtadeen )
"And on the Day when He will gather them, it will be as if they had not remained [130] in the world except for an hour [131] of the day. They will recognize one another [132]. Those who had denied the meeting with Allah will have certainly lost [133], and they were not rightly guided." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)
This verse refers to the briefness of life in this world compared to the Hereafter. The Mutazillah sect cannot use this verse as proof for the punishment of the grave, as it specifically compares the time spent in the world to an hour on the Day of Judgment. When compared to the eternal nature of the Hereafter, the life in this world is incredibly short. The verse stresses the transience of worldly existence, suggesting that in the grand scheme of the Hereafter, it is as if it lasted only for an hour.
The mention of an "hour of the day" signifies that, for the believer, this world will seem like a fleeting moment once they experience the reality of the Afterlife. The reference to day, as opposed to night, suggests that believers will have a clear understanding of their earthly life, whereas the infidels will lose their sensory awareness and will not have the clarity of the believer. The verse highlights the perspective shift that will occur on the Day of Judgment.
On the Day of Resurrection, recognition of others will occur initially but will soon fade due to the overwhelming nature of Qiyamah. During the resurrection, infidels will recognize each other, but the intensity of the fears of the Day will cause them to lose that recognition. This illustrates the instability and confusion that will dominate the scene of Judgment, where physical recognition becomes secondary to the psychological and emotional chaos.
The disbelievers will have suffered an enormous loss, as they sacrificed their faith and belief in the Hereafter for the temporary gains of this world. Their rejection of Allah’s message leads them to a state of eternal loss, as they sold their eternal salvation for worldly desires, resulting in their ultimate ruin.
45. And on the Day when He shall gather them together, (it will be) as if they had not stayed (in the life of this world and graves) but an hour of a day. They will recognize each other. Ruined indeed will be those who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided.
To remind people of the establishment of the Hour and their resurrection from their graves to the gathering for the Day of Judgment, Allah says:
(And on the Day when He shall gather (resurrect) them.) Similarly Allah said:
(On the Day when they will see that (torment) with which they are promised (threatened, it will be) as if they had not stayed more than an hour in a single day.)﴿46:35﴾ Allah also said:
(The Day they see it, (it will be) as if they had not tarried (in this world) except an afternoon or a morning.) ﴿79:46﴾
(The Day when the Trumpet will be blown (the second blowing): that Day, We shall gather the criminals, blue eyed. They will speak in a very low voice to each other (saying): “You stayed not longer than ten (days).” We know very well what they will say, when the best among them in knowledge and wisdom will say: “You stayed no longer than a day!”) ﴿20:102-104﴾ and,
(And on the Day that the Hour will be established, the criminals will swear that they stayed not but an hour.)﴿30:55﴾ These all are evidence of the brevity of the worldly life compared to the Hereafter. Allah said:
(He (Allah) will say: “What number of years did you stay on earth” They will say: “We stayed a day or part of a day. Ask of those who keep account.” He (Allah) will say: “You stayed not but a little, if you had only known!”) ﴿23:112-124﴾ Allah then said:
(They will recognize each other) The children will know their parents and relatives will recognize one another. They will know them just like they used to know them during the life in this world. However, on that Day everyone will be busy with himself. Allah then said:
(Then, when the Trumpet is blown, there will be no kinship among them.)﴿23:101﴾ Allah also said:
(And no friend will ask a friend (about his condition).)﴿70:10﴾ Allah then said:
(Ruined indeed will be those who denied the meeting with Allah and were not guided.) This is similar to the Ayah:
(Woe that Day to the deniers.)﴿77:15﴾ Woe to them because they will lose themselves and their families on the Day of Resurrection. That is indeed the great loss. There is no loss greater than the loss of one who will be taken away from his dear ones on the Day of Grief and Regret.
(10:45) (But today they are oblivious of everything except enjoyment of worldly life.) And on the Day when He will muster all men together, they will feel as though they had been in the world no more than an hour of the day to get acquainted with one another.[53] (It will then become evident that) those who called the lie to meeting with Allah[54] were utter losers and were not rightly-directed.
53. That is, when they will enter the Hereafter and contrast its eternal life with the transitory life they lived in this world, they will realize that their past life was nothing in comparison with the eternal future life of the Hereafter. Then they will see clearly that it was a big folly to spoil the eternal life for the sake of transitory joys and paltry gains of the world.
54. They were losers because they forgot that one day they would have to present themselves before Allah and as a result of this disbelief they committed evil deeds.
