📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 89

"He said, 'The prayers of both of you have been answered [236]. So be steadfast [237], and do not follow the path of those who do not know [238].'"

✅ [236] The Importance of "Ameen" and the Timing of Supplications

Hazrat Musa (Alaihis Salaam) made the prayer, and Hazrat Haroon (Alaihis Salaam) said "Ameen." This teaches us that saying "Ameen" is an integral part of the supplication. It is also better to offer supplications softly, as mentioned in the Qur'an: "Supplicate to your Lord in absolute humility and silence" (S7:V55). After forty years, the consequences of this prayer were seen, as Pharaoh and his wealth were destroyed.

✅ [237] Steadfastness in Propagation

Musa (Alaihis Salaam) was instructed to remain steadfast and continue preaching to the believers about their duties, while also calling Pharaoh and his followers to embrace faith. This teaches us the importance of continuing to spread the message of Islam, even to those whom we think may never accept it.

✅ [238] The Wisdom Behind the Delay of Supplications

Some may hasten for the immediate acceptance of their supplications and fail to understand that there is wisdom in the delay. A delay in the acceptance of a prayer can elevate the status of the one who is offering it, as it tests patience and trust in Allah’s timing and plan.

The tafsir of Surah Yunus verse 89 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Yunus ayat 88 which provides the complete commentary from verse 88 through 89.

(10:89) Allah responded: ‘The prayer of the two of you is accepted. So keep steadfast, and do not follow the path of the ignorant.[90]

Ala-Maududi

(10:89) Allah responded: ‘The prayer of the two of you is accepted. So keep steadfast, and do not follow the path of the ignorant.[90]

90. In this verse, Allah has urged Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and his followers to guard against a common misunderstanding that is likely to arise in such cases. It so happens that those people who have no knowledge of the reality and who do not understand the wisdom of Allah’s ways are liable to believe from the apparent success of His rebels that perhaps it is His will that they should dominate in the world. When they witness the failures of the upholders of the truth in their conflict with falsehood in contrast to the splendor and vast possessions of the champions of falsehood, they begin to think that Allah does not will to help the truth in its conflict with falsehood. Therefore some foolish people further conclude from these wrong suppositions that it is useless to exert for the establishment of the truth. Then they consider it to be the best and most proper thing to rest content with the little religiosity that the sovereignty of falsehood and unbelief allows them. That is why Allah has urged Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and his followers to guard against such a misunderstanding and to carry on the mission entrusted to them with patience under the adverse circumstances.

(89) [Allāh] said, "Your supplication has been answered."[538] So remain on a right course and follow not the way of those who do not know."

[538]- Literally, "the supplication of both of you," i.e., that of Moses and of Aaron, who joined by saying, "Āmeen" ("O Allāh, respond").
