📖 Commentary of Surah Yunus – Verse 40

"And among them is he who believes in it, and among them is he who does not believe [120]. And your Lord knows best those who cause mischief [121]."

✅ [120] The Mixed Response to the Qur'an

The verse prophesies that among the people of Makkah, some will believe in the Qur'an, while others will reject it. This prediction came true, as not everyone who heard the message of Islam accepted it. The verse illustrates a universal truth: not all people will benefit from the greatest of blessings, and sometimes, those who are most in need may not be receptive to the truth. Just as bats do not benefit from the sunlight or saline soil does not benefit from rain, some individuals remain blind to the blessings of faith due to their spiritual condition.

✅ [121] The Causes of Rejection: Misunderstanding and Mischief

The rejection of the Qur'an is driven by two main factors: misunderstanding and mischief. Some people reject the Qur'an because of ignorance or misunderstanding, while others do so out of envy and hostility towards the message and its followers. The verse suggests that the first group may still receive guidance, as their rejection is based on misunderstanding. However, the second group, who are driven by mischief and hostility, are less likely to be guided, as their hearts are closed to the truth.

(10:40) Of those some will believe and others will not. Your Lord knows best the mischief-makers.[48]

Ala-Maududi

(10:40) Of those some will believe and others will not. Your Lord knows best the mischief-makers.[48]

48. Those who do not believe in the Quran have been called “corrupters” or mischief makers because their rejection is not based on any sound reason but on prejudice and selfishness and because it prevents others from believing in it. “And your Lord is Best Aware” because there is nothing that is hidden from Him. They can deceive the people that they are rejecting the Quran because they are convinced that it is not the Book of God, but they cannot deceive Allah that they are doing this with good intentions for he knows that it is because of their mischief. They are obdurate and obstinate and are suppressing the voice of their consciences and hearts: they deliberately shut their ears and minds against the truth and prefer their worldly interests, their fancies, their lusts and desires to it. That is why they cannot be regarded as innocent sinners, but they are, in fact, the mischief makers.

(40) And of them are those who believe in it, and of them are those who do not believe in it. And your Lord is most knowing of the corrupters.
