159. And of the people of Musa there is a community that guided others with truth and did justice therewith (361).

Surah Al-Araf Ayat 159 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

361. By this is meant after Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) many of his followers went astray, but at the same time one group remained firmly on Truth. Hazrat Sayyedina Abdullah ibn Abbas (May Allah be pleased with him) says that these religious people secretly moved away from the rest of these disobedient wretches and settled down in a region of China. On the Night of Me'raj the met these Holy Prophet people who conveyed the greetings of Hazrat Musa (On whom be peace) to him and became Muslims at his hands (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan).

Ibn-Kathir

159. And of the people of Musa there is a community who lead (the men) with truth and establish justice therewith.) Allah stated that of the Children of Israel there are some who follow the truth and judge by it, just as He said in another Ayah,

(A party of the people of the Scripture stand for the right, they recite the verses of Allah during the hours of the night, prostrating themselves in prayer) ï´¿3:113ï´¾,

(And there are, certainly, among the People of the Scripture, those who believe in Allah and in that which has been revealed to you, and in that which has been revealed to them, humbling themselves before Allah. They do not sell the verses of Allah for a small price, for them is a reward with their Lord. Surely, Allah is Swift in account.) ï´¿3:199ï´¾

(Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it, they believe in it (the Qur’an). And when it is recited to them, they say: “We believe in it. Verily, it is the truth from our Lord. Indeed even before it we have been from those who submit themselves. These will be given their reward twice over, because they are patient.)﴿28:52-54﴾, and,

(Verily, those who were given knowledge before it, when it (this Qur’an) is recited to them, fall down on their faces in humble prostration. And they say: “Glory be to our Lord! Truly, the promise of our Lord must be fulfilled.” And they fall down on their faces weeping and it increases their humility.)﴿17:107-109﴾

(7:159) Among the people of Moses’[116] there was a party who guided others in the way of the truth and established justice in its light. [117]

116. This marks the resumption of the main theme of the discourse which had been interrupted by the parenthesis see (verses 157-8)calling people to affirm the prophethood of Muhammad (peace be on him).

117. The translators generally render the verse as the following:

Of the people of Moses there is a section who guide and do justice in the light of truth. (Translation by Abdullah Yusuf Ali.)

They do so because, in their view, the present verse describes the moral and intellectual state of the Israelites at the time when the Qur’an was revealed. However, the context seems to indicate that the above account refers to the state of the Israelites at the time of the Prophet Moses. Thus, the purpose of the verse is to emphasize that even in the days of their calf-worship when God rebuked them, all members of Israel were not corrupt; that a sizeable section of them was righteous.
