80. And We sent Lut (194) when he said to his people: "Do you commit that indecency (195) which was not committed by anyone in the world before you (196)?

Surah Al-Araf Ayat 80 Tafsir (Commentry)

  • Tafseer-e-Naeemi (Ahmad Yaar Khan)
  • Ibn Kathir
  • Ala-Madudi

194. Hazrat Lut (On whom be peace) was the nephew of Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace). He was the Prophet in Sadoom while Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace) was a Prophet in Syria and Palestine. He had migrated with Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace) and came to Syria, and was of great service to Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace) and was made a Prophet through the prayer of Hazrat Ebrahim (On whom be peace).

195. By 'indecency' is meant sodomy which is explained in the next verse. Indecency is a sin that is regarded as evil by one's mind. Although infidelity is the worst of the major sins, yet Allah Almighty did not describe it as indecent, because the human mind does not show aversion to it. Many intellectuals are Involved in infidelity. On the other hand, sodomy is such a repulsive act, that even animals are repugnant about it besides the pig.

196. From this emerge a few issues:

1. Sodomy is the invention of the people of Hazrat Lut (On whom be peace), for this reason, it is called LAWAATAH or Sodomy.

2. Sodomy with boys is absolutely forbidden and one who does not reject it as an unlawful act is an infidel.

3. Even the infidels are duty-bound by these laws because these are behavioral laws. However, they are duty-bound by laws concerning worship.

Ibn-Kathir

80. And (remember) Lut, when he said to his people: “Do you commit lewdness such as none preceding you has committed in all of the nations 81. “Verily, you practice your lusts on men instead of women. Nay, but you are a people transgressing beyond bounds.”

The Story of Prophet Lut, upon Him be Peace, and His People

Allah said, We sent,

ï´¿ÙˆÙŽï´¾

(And)

(Lut, when he said to his people..) Lut (Lot) is the son of Haran the son of Azar (Terah), and he was the nephew of Ibrahim, peace be upon them both. Lut had believed in Ibrahim and migrated with him to the Sham area. Allah then sent Lut to the people of Sadum (Sodom) and the surrounding villages, to call them to Allah, enjoin righteousness and forbid them from their evil practices, their sin, and wickedness. It this area, they did things that none of the children of Adam or any other creatures ever did before them. They used to have sexual intercourse with males instead of females. This evil practice was not known among the Children of Adam before, nor did it even cross their minds, so they were unfamiliar with it before the people of Sodom invented it, may Allah’s curse be on them. `Amr bin Dinar conmented on;

(“…as none preceding you has committed in all of the nations.”) “Never before the people of Lut did a male have sex with another male.” This is why Lut said to them,

(“Do you commit lewdness such as none preceding you has committed in all of the nations Verily, you practice your lusts on men instead of women.”) meaning, you left women whom Allah created for you and instead had sex with men Indeed, this behavior is evil and ignorant because you have placed things in their improper places. Lut, peace be upon him, said to them:

﴿هَـؤُلآءِ بَنَاتِى إِن كُنْتُمْ فَـعِلِينَ﴾

(“these (the girls of the nation) are my daughters (to marry lawfully), if you must act (so).”) ﴿15:71﴾ So he reminded them of their women, and they replied that they do not desire women!,

(They said: “Surely, you know that we have neither any desire nor need of your daughters, and indeed you know well what we want!” ) ﴿11:79﴾ meaning, you know that we have no desire for women and you know what we desire with your guests.

(7:80) And remember when We sent Lot [as a Messeng to his people and he said to them:[63] ‘Do you realize you practise an indecency of which no other people in the world were guilty of before you?

63. The land inhabited by the people of Lot, which lies between Iraq and Palestine, is known as Trans-Jordan. According to the Bible, its capital town was Sodom, which is situated either somewhere near the Dead Sea, or presently lies submerged under it.. Apart from Sodom, according to the Talmud, there were four other majour cities, and the land lying between these cities was dotted with such greenery and orchards that the whole area looked like one big garden enchanting any onlooker. However, the whole nation was destroyed and today wc can find no trace of it. So much so that it is difficult to even locate the main cities which they inhabited. If anything remains as a reminder of this nation it is the Dead Sea which is also called the Sea of Lot. The Prophet Lot who was a nephew of the Prophet Abraham, accompanied his uncle as he moved away from Iraq. Lot sojourned to Syria, Palestincand Egypt forawhile and gained practical experience of preaching his message. Later God bettowed prophethood upon him and assigned to him the mission of reforming his misguided people. The people of Sodom have been referred to as the people of Lot presumably because Lot may have established matrimonial ties with those people.

One of the many accusations recorded gainst Lot in the Bible – and the Bible has been tampered with extensively by the Jews – is that Lot migrated to Sodom after an argument with Abraham (Genesis 13: 10-12).

The Qur’an refutes this baseless charge and affirms that Lot was designated by God to work as His Messenger among his people.

The author refers to an argument between Abraham and Lot which he considers to be a fabrication of Jews. The obvious basis of this is that such an argument between the Prophets is inconceivable since it is unbecoming of them as Prophets. The basis of this inference is a statement in Genesis 13:1-12.

It seems that there has been some confusion with regard to this inference. The verses of Genesis in question make no reference to any strife between the two Prophets. The strife to which it refers allegedly took place between the two Prophets. In addition, when the two Prophets parted company it was on a pleasant note for Abraham had suggested that since there was an abundance of land, Lot should choose that part of the land he preffered so as to exclude all possibilities of strife between their herdsmen. (See Genesis 13:1-5-Ed.)
