    82. And there was no answer from his people, but they only said: "Turn them out of your town [198]; surely these people aspire to be pure." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

    📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 82

    "And there was no answer from his people, but they only said: 'Turn them out of your town [198]; surely these people aspire to be pure.'"

    ✅ Forcing Out the Righteous Invites Divine Punishment [198]

    This verse shows the twisted mindset of a morally corrupt society. When people are near destruction, they begin to think in reverse and lopsided ways—viewing piety as a threat. Instead of valuing the righteous presence of Prophet Lut (عليه السلام) and his followers, they plotted to expel them, saying they are too “pure.”

    The presence of pious servants in a town brings divine protection, while their expulsion invites punishment. By choosing to drive them out, the people of Lut were welcoming Allah’s wrath upon themselves.

    Additionally, the Arabic word “Qaryah” (town) here refers to a large city, as Sadoom was not a small village but a well-populated urban center. This also supports the ruling in Hadith that Jumu’ah Salah is valid only in a city, such as Jawatha, and not in a village. Therefore, those who use the word Qaryah to justify Jumu’ah in small villages base their argument on a misinterpretation, as Qaryah in classical usage refers to a city, not a rural hamlet.

    82. And the answer of his people was only that they said: “Drive them out of your town, these are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!”) So they answered Prophet Lut by trying to expel and banish him from their village, along with those who believed with him. Allah indeed removed Prophet Lut safely from among them, and He destroyed them in their land in disgrace and humiliation. They said (about Lut and the believers):

    ﴿إِنَّهُمْ أُنَاسٌ يَتَطَهَّرُونَ﴾

    (“These are indeed men who want to be pure (from sins)!”) Qatadah commented, “They shamed them (Lut and the believers) with what is not a shame at all.” Mujahid commented, “(Lut’s people said about Lut and the believers,) They are a people who want to be pure from men’s anuses and women’s anuses!” Similar was narrated from Ibn `Abbas.

    65. It is evident from the present verse that the people of Lot Were not only shameless and corrupt, but were also a people who had sunk in moral depravity to such a degree that even the presence of a few righteous persons had become intolerable to them. Their moral degradation left them with no patience for anyone who sought to bring about any moral reform. Even the slightest element of purity found in their society was too much for them, and they simply wished to have their society purged of it.

    When these people reached such a low point of wickedness and hostility to good, God decreed that they be wiped out altogether. When the collective life of a people becomes totally bereft of goodness and purity, it forfeits the right to exist on earth. Their example is like that of a basket of fruit. As long as some fruit remains firm, there is some justification to keep that basket. But the basket has to be thrown away when the fruit becomes rotten.
