📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 78

"Then the earthquake [191] overtook them, and they lay prostrate in their homes, in the morning."

✅ Combined Punishment of Scream and Earthquake [191]

The destruction of the people of Thamud came in the form of both a mighty scream and a violent earthquake. Hazrat Jibraeel (عليه السلام) released a terrifying scream, which pierced their hearts, followed by an earthquake that shook their land and flattened them within their homes.

Though the Qur’an sometimes mentions only the scream and in other places only the earthquake, there is no contradictionboth forms of punishment occurred together, one following the other. Their fate was sealed for rejecting the divine sign and mocking the Prophet’s warning. By morning, their once-proud dwellings lay in silence, as their bodies lay lifeless, fallen on their faces, buried under the weight of disobedience and disbelief.

Ibn-Kathir

62. Other Qur’anic expressions used for the calamity are ‘rajifah’ (earthquake) (al-Nazi’at 79: 6); ‘sayah’ (awesome cry) (Hud 11: 67); ‘Sa’iqah’ (thunderbolt) (al-Baqarah 2: 55); and ‘taghiyah” (roaring noise) (al-Haqqah 69: 5).

(78) So the earthquake seized them, and they became within their home [corpses] fallen prone.
