Transliteration:( Fabaddalal lazeena zalamoo minhum qawlan ghairal lazee qeela lahum fa arsalnaa 'alaihim rijzan minas samaaa'i bimaa kaanoo yazlimoon )
But those who wronged among them changed the words that were said to them to something else [370]. So We sent upon them a punishment from the heavens [371] because of their wrongdoing.
From this we learn that changing the exact wording of supplications or Wazeefas provided by religious mentors can nullify their effect. One should recite them exactly as received from the Shaikh, without modification. The Israelites altered the words given to them for repentance and mocked the instruction, leading to divine displeasure.
As a result of their wrongdoing, Allah sent upon them a heavenly punishment in the form of a bubonic plague, which caused the death of twenty-four thousand Israelites. However, in Islamic tradition, this same illness is considered a mercy for believers. If one bears it patiently and dies, they are considered a martyr. As per Hadith Shareef, one should not enter plague-infested regions, nor should they flee from it if it reaches their own area.
