📖 Commentary of Verse 101 (Surah Al-Baqarah)

"And when a Messenger (Rasool) from Allah [191] came to them confirming that which was with them, a party [192] from among the people of the Book (Scripture) threw the Scripture of Allah behind their backs [193] as if they did not know (what it contained). [194]"

✅ [191] The Divine Origin and Mission of the Prophet ﷺ

This verse points to the sacred origin of the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

Before his arrival in this world, he existed in the Divine realm, and was sent down by the express command of Allah as a Messenger to mankind.

Unlike ordinary humans who carry personal responsibility, Allah takes responsibility for the Messenger ﷺ.

His sending was not a mere historical occurrence but a divine act of mercy and purpose.

✅ [192] The Four Categories Among the People of the Book

The Yahud were not a monolithic group, and can be classified into four categories:

  1. The Believers – Those who obeyed the Tawrat and later believed in the Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  2. The Open Rebels – Those who knowingly rejected the commandments of the Tawrat, as reflected in:

"One party of them throws it out..." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 100)

  3. The Ignorant Transgressors – Those who violated the laws out of ignorance, referred to in:

"As if they had no knowledge." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 101)

  4. The Hypocrites – Those who outwardly accepted the Tawrat but inwardly mocked it and were hostile toward its spirit, captured in:

"Most of them have no faith." (Surah Al-Baqarah: 100)

✅ [193] Rejecting the Qur’an Is Like Turning One’s Back on It

From this verse we learn that not acting upon the Qur’an, even if one recites it daily or decorates it beautifully, is like turning away from it—just as the Yahud discarded the Tawrat when they rejected the Holy Prophet ﷺ, despite him being clearly prophesied in it.

Rejection of the Prophet ﷺ was not just disobedience, it was equivalent to throwing Allah’s Book behind their backs.

✅ [194] Disrespect and Hypocrisy Exposed

This verse contains a subtle warning:

  • One must not physically or spiritually turn their back on the Qur’an, as doing so is a sign of disrespect and spiritual deadness.

  • A learned person who does not act upon divine knowledge is equal to an ignorant person, or even worse.

Thus, this verse emphasizes both the necessity of sincere belief and the importance of practice—not just theoretical knowledge.
