Transliteration:( Allazeena aatainaahumul Kitaaba yatloonahoo haqqa tilaawatiheee ulaaa'ika yu'minoona bih; wa mai yakfur bihee fa ulaaa'ika humul khaasiroon )
"Those to whom We have given the Scripture [242] recite it as it ought to be recited. They alone have faith in it. And those who disbelieve in it—they are the losers."
From this verse, we learn that the true People of the Book (Ahle-Kitaab) are only those who:
Have been blessed with divine guidance
Recite the Book with sincerity, understanding, and firm adherence to its teachings
Simply being called “People of the Book” while misusing, misreading, or distorting the Scriptures is sheer hypocrisy and renders their claim meaningless.
🕊️ A true believer is one who:
Reads the Book of Allah sincerely
Accepts the truth of the Holy Prophet ﷺ
Follows its teachings faithfully
Hence, those who bring Imaan (faith) in the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ are the real followers of previous scriptures.
📌 On the contrary, those who reject the Prophet ﷺ, despite claiming to follow earlier Books, are not considered true followers of those Books.
The tafsir of Surah Baqarah verse 121 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Baqarah ayat 120 which provides the complete commentary from verse 120 through 121.
(2:121) Those to whom We have given the Scripture, and who recite it as it ought to be recited, they truly believe in it;[122] and those who disbelieve in it, they are the real losers.
122. This refers to the pious element among the People of the Book. Since these people read the Book with sincerity and honesty of purpose, they are inclined to accept whatever they find to be true according to it.
[39]- i.e., applying its teachings to their lives.
