"And recall when Musa prayed for water for his people, then We said: 'Strike the stone with your staff.' At once, there gushed forth from it twelve [108] springs. And every group (tribe) knew its drinking place. Eat and drink from the provisions of Allah and do not go about corrupting the earth with mischief [109]."
This is the miracle of Hazrat Musa, which is equivalent to the other miracles during the Israelites’ exodus to Jerusalem.
Allah provided them water where there was none, through a miraculous stone and Hazrat Musa’s walking stick.
This stone and staff were always with Hazrat Musa, and he would use them whenever and wherever water was needed.
This miracle too was performed at Teeh, where the miracle of Manna and Salwa was also granted.
Allah responded to Hazrat Musa’s dua for water by commanding him to strike the stone with his staff, and twelve fountains sprang forth, one for each tribe.
This incident clearly proves that Prophets are a means through which Allah’s bounties and blessings are obtained.
Hazrat Musa’s miracle helps us understand an even greater miracle of our Holy Prophet ﷺ, who provided water from his fingers to his Companions.
This event also shows that keeping a walking stick is a Sunnah of the Prophets, and making dua for rain is likewise a prophetic tradition.
It further reminds us that sins and mischief are causes for the closure of Allah’s bounties and favours.
60. And (remember) when Musa asked for water for his people, We said: “Strike the stone with your stick.” Then gushed forth therefrom twelve springs. Each (group of) people knew its own place for water. “Eat and drink of that which Allah has provided and do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth.”
Allah said, “Remember My favor on you when I answered the supplication of your Prophet, Musa, when he asked Me to provide you with water. I made the water available for you, making it gush out through a stone. Twelve springs burst out of that stone, a designated spring for each of your tribes. You eat from the manna and the quails and drink from the water that I provided for you, without any effort or hardship for you. So worship the One Who did this for you.
(And do not act corruptly, making mischief on the earth) meaning, “Do not return the favor by committing acts of disobedience that cause favors to disappear.”
Ibn `Abbas said that the Children of Israel, “Had a square stone that Musa was commanded to strike with his staff and, as a result, twelve springs burst out of that stone, three on each side. Each tribe was, therefore, designated a certain spring, and they used to drink from their springs. They never had to travel from their area, they would find the same bounty in the same manner they had in the first area.”This narration is part of the long Hadith that An-Nasa’i, Ibn Jarir and Ibn Abi Hatim recorded about the trials.
This story is similar to the story in Surat Al-`Araf (Chapter 7) although the latter was revealed in Makkah. In Surat Al-A`raf, Allah used the third person when He mentioned the Children of Israel to the Prophet and narrated what He favored them with. In this Surat Al-Baqarah, which was revealed in Al-Madinah, Allah directed His Speech at the Children of Israel. Further, Allah said in Surat Al-A`raf,
(And there gushed forth out of it twelve springs) (7:160), describing whh described what happened later on, meaning when the water burst out in full force. Allah h described what happened later on, meaning when the water burst out in full force. Allah knows best.
(2:60) And recall when Moses prayed for water for his people and We replied: “Strike the rock with your staff.” And there gushed out from it twelve springs[76] and each tribe knew its drinking-place. (Then you were directed): “Eat and drink of the sustenance provided by Allah, and do not go about acting wickedly on earth, spreading mischief.”
76 That rock can still be seen in the Sinai Peninsula with the twelve holes of the springs. Twelve springs were caused to flow for the Israelites in order to avoid water disputes among their twelve clans.
