📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse 127

"And [recall] when Ibrahim was raising the foundations [257] of the House (Ka'bah) along with Ismail, (praying): 'O our Lord! Accept this from us. Indeed, You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing [258].'"

✅ [257] Building Mosques with Purity and Du‘ā

This verse shows that Hazrat Ibrahim (AS) and Hazrat Ismail (AS), while raising the foundations of the Ka'bah, continuously made du‘ā, asking Allah to accept their effort.

From this, we learn:

  • It is commendable for pious Muslims to be employed in mosque construction

  • Such work should ideally be done in a state of Wudu (ritual purity)

  • Du‘ā during righteous work, especially when building Allah’s House, is a sign of humility and sincerity

📌 This verse is often cited as proof for the tradition of remaining spiritually pure while engaged in religious construction work

✅ [258] The Ka'bah and Makkah – Permanence and Divine Response

This verse, while referring to the House of Allah, also implies the permanent sanctity of Makkah.

Key lessons:

  • The term “city” (as mentioned in previous verses) indicates that Makkah will always remain a city, never reduced to a village

  • Even if it experiences no material growth, its inhabitants will never go hungry

  • True servants of Allah, such as Hazrat Ibrahim and Hazrat Ismail, receive quick divine responses to their prayers due to their obedience and nearness to Allah

🕊️ Allah is As-Samee‘ (All-Hearing) and Al-‘Aleem (All-Knowing)—He hears even the quietest prayers and knows the deepest intentions.

Ibn-Kathir

`O our Lord ! Accept (this service) from us, Verily, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.’ (2.127).”’ Hence, they were building the House, part by part, going around it and saying,

﴿رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّآ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ السَّمِيعُ الْعَلِيمُ﴾

(2:127) Recall when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House, praying: “Our Lord! Accept this from us; You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

Ala-Maududi

(2:127) Recall when Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House, praying: “Our Lord! Accept this from us; You are All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
