"And the example of those who spend their wealth to seek the pleasure of Allah [697] and to strengthen their hearts is like a garden on elevated [698] ground. Heavy rain fell upon it, and it yielded double the fruit. And if heavy rain does not fall on it, then dew suffices [699]. And Allah observes what you do [700]."
In acquiring wealth there is a hint that a believer should spend out of every wealth acquired on all types of good occasions at all times and not suffice on giving Zakaat only. He should give clothes, food, cash, crops, property, etc. in the way of Allah.
From this it is evident that the reward of charity and good deeds will be given according to their intentions.
It is for this reason that our spending of a mountain full of gold is not equal to even 1¼ kg grain of the Companions of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, because we do not possess their high degree of sincerity.
Likewise, giving charity to any saintly pauper is better than giving it to a sinful beggar.
The quantity of the crop depends on the quality of the earth—meaning the charity is the crop, and the beggar is the earth.
By "dew suffices" is meant that land with high-quality soil will still produce good crop even without heavy rain.
Likewise, the charity of a believer will yield reward whether it is big or small, based on sincerity.
By Allah, the condition of the heart is judged, not the quantity of wealth.
Just as fertile land gives better crops, some sacred locations offer higher rewards for good deeds.
For example: In the Mosque of the Holy Prophet ﷺ (Masjid al-Nabawi), the reward of one good deed is equal to fifty thousand.
This proves that Allah not only sees our deeds, but also grants extra rewards based on place, time, and sincerity.
The tafsir of Surah Baqarah verse 264 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Baqarah ayat 262 which provides the complete commentary from verse 262 through 264.
(2:265) The example of those who spend their wealth single-mindedly to please Allah is that of a garden on a high ground. If a heavy rain smites it, it brings forth its fruits twofold, and if there is no heavy rain, even a light shower suffices it.[306] Allah sees all that you do.
306. ‘Heavy rain’ signifies here charity motivated by a high degree of benevolence and sincerity. ‘Light shower’ refers to charity deficient in sincerity and goodness, though not altogether devoid of them.
