📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse 162

"They will abide eternally therein. Neither will the punishment be lightened for them [341], nor will they be granted respite [342]." (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

[341] Unchanging Punishment for Infidels

From this verse, we learn that the punishment of the infidels will remain unchanged from the beginning until eternity. They will experience continuous and unrelieved suffering.

  • Contrast with Believers: This is different from the punishment for believers, whose punishment may decrease over time due to Allah's mercy and forgiveness.

[342] No Relief or Respite

The verse also indicates that the infidels will not be relieved from their punishment, nor will they be given respite or a chance to repent.

  • No Opportunity for Repentance: This suggests that infidels will not have a chance to change their ways or earn forgiveness after death.

  • Exception in Special Cases: While the punishment for the infidels is absolute, there are exceptions. For instance, a Hadith from Sahih Bukhari mentions that Abu Lahab’s punishment is lessened every Monday due to his act of setting free his servant Suaibah, who had breastfed the Prophet ﷺ. This shows Allah's special decrees and exceptions for certain individuals.
