📖 Commentary of Surah Al-Baqarah – Verse 136

"Say (O Muslims): 'We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us, and what was revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaaq [271], Yaqub, and the descendants [272], and what was granted to Musa and Isa, and what was given to the other Prophets [273] from their Lord. We make no distinction in faith [274] between any of them, and we have submitted to Him.'"

✅ [271] Hazrat Ismail, Ishaaq, and Yaqub – Preachers of the Same Divine Message

This verse mentions Hazrat Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaaq, and Yaqub, all great Prophets of Allah.

  • Hazrat Ishaaq and Yaqub (AS) were not given new scrolls (Suhuf)

  • Instead, they preached the same Sahifa (divine scroll) that was revealed to Hazrat Ibrahim (AS)

📌 Hence, the verse does not separately mention new revelations for them, but affirms that they were part of the same chain of guidance

✅ [272] Descendants of Yaqub (AS) – Proof of Prophethood

Some Ulema (Islamic scholars) interpret this verse as evidence that all the children of Hazrat Yaqub (AS) — including the brothers of Hazrat Yusuf (AS) — were Prophets.

  • This is inferred from the phrase “descendants” being directly included in the honored list of Prophets

  • Thus, it reflects the collective sanctity of Hazrat Yaqub's lineage

✅ [273] Belief in All Prophets Without Counting Their Exact Number

This verse teaches us two important principles:

  1. We must believe in all the Prophets sent by Allah

  2. It is not necessary—nor proven conclusively—to know the exact number of Prophets

📌 Though their status may differ, all Prophethood itself is genuine and divinely appointed.

✅ [274] Equal Faith in All Prophets – No Rejection Permissible

This verse clarifies a core tenet of Islamic belief:

  1. All Prophets are equal in their truthfulness and authenticity—none are counterfeit or transitory

  2. It is Fard (obligatory) to believe in every Prophet sent by Allah

    • Rejecting even one Prophet is an act of Kufr (disbelief)

📌 While Allah Himself has granted higher ranks to certain Prophets, we are not allowed to show bias in faith between them.

We accept the distinctions in status, but not in belief or truth.

Ibn-Kathir

135. And they say, “Be Jews or Christians, then you will be guided.” Say (to them O Muhammad ), “Nay, (we follow) only the religion of Ibrahim, Hanif (Islamic Monotheism), and he was not of Al-Mushrikin (those who worshipped others along with Allah.

Muhammad bin Ishaq reported that Ibn `Abbas said that `Abdullah bin Suriya Al-A`war said to the Messenger of Allah, “The guidance is only what we (Jews) follow. Therefore, follow us, O Muhammad, and you will be rightly guided.” Also, the Christians said similarly, so Allah revealed,

﴿وَقَالُواْ كُونُواْ هُودًا أَوْ نَصَـرَى تَهْتَدُواْ﴾

(And they say, “Be Jews or Christians, then you will be guided.”) Allah’s statement,

﴿قُلْ بَلْ مِلَّةَ إِبْرَهِيمَ حَنِيفًا﴾

(Say (to them O Muhammad ), “Nay, (we follow) only the religion of Ibrahim, Hanif) means, “We do not need the Judaism or Christianity that you call us to, rather,

﴿مِلَّةَ إِبْرَهِيمَ حَنِيفاً﴾

((we follow) only the religion of Ibrahim, Hanif) meaning, on the straight path, as Muhammad bin Ka`b Al-Qurazi and `Isa bin Jariyah stated. Also, Abu Qilabah said, “The Hanif is what the Messengers, from beginning to end, believed in.”)

(2:136) Say: “We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the descendants (of Jacob) and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and in what the other Prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them,[136] and we are those who submit to Allah.”

Ala-Maududi

(2:136) Say: “We believe in Allah, and in what has been revealed to us and to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob and the descendants (of Jacob) and in what was given to Moses and Jesus and in what the other Prophets received from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them,[136] and we are those who submit to Allah.”

136. To make no distinction between the Prophets means not to hold some of them to he right and the others to be wrong, not to recognize some to have been the recipients of Divine revelation and the others not. All the Prophets sent by God invited men to the same Truth and to the same way. Hence for anyone who is really a lover of Truth it is necessary that he should recognize all of them to be its bearers. Those who believe in one particular Prophet and disbelieve in others do not in fact believe even in that particular Prophet in whom they, claim to believe, for they have not grasped the nature of that universal ‘Straight Way’ (al-sirat al-mustaqim) which was enunciated by Moses, Jesus and the other Prophets. When such people claim to follow a Prophet they, really mean that they do so out of deference to their forefathers. Their religion in fact consists of bigoted ancestor-worship and blind imitation of inherited customs rather than sincere adherence to the directives of any Prophet of God.

(136) Say, [O believers], "We have believed in Allāh and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the Descendants [al-Asbāṭ][48] and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims [in submission] to Him."
