📖 Commentary of Verse 53 (Surah Al-Baqarah)

"And when We gave Musa the Book and the Criterion [97] so that you might be guided."

✅ [97] Purpose of Guidance through the Book

In this verse, guidance refers to guidance towards doing good deeds and not belief, because the Bani Israel had already accepted faith.

Therefore, Prophets give guidance for Faith, while the Book provides guidance for doing good deeds through the medium of a Prophet.

It is for this reason that a non-believer is made a believer via recitation of the Kalimah Tayyibah and is then taught the Qur’aan.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Baqarah verse 53 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Baqarah ayat 51 which provides the complete commentary from verse 51 through 53.

(2:53) And recall (that while you were committing this wrong) We gave Moses the Scripture[69] and the Criterion that you are guided to the Right Way.

Ala-Maududi

(2:53) And recall (that while you were committing this wrong) We gave Moses the Scripture[69] and the Criterion that you are guided to the Right Way.

69. ‘Criterion’ here means that understanding of religion which differentiates truth from falsehood, making each stand out distinctly.

(53) And [recall] when We gave Moses the Scripture and criterion[27] that perhaps you would be guided.

[27]- Differentiating between truth and falsehood. "The Scripture and criterion" refers to the Torah.
