Transliteration:( Wa law laa fadlul laahi 'alaika wa rahmatuhoo lahammat taaa'ifatum minhum ai yudillooka wa maa yudilloona illaaa anfusahum wa maa yadurroonaka min shai'; wa anzalal laahu 'alaikal Kitaaba wal Hikmata wa 'allamaka maa lam takun ta'lam; wa kaana fadlul laahi 'alaika 'azeemaa )
“And (O Beloved Prophet) if there had not been the Bounty and Mercy of Allah upon you [347], then a group of them would have certainly tried to deceive you. But, they are only misleading themselves [348] and they will not do harm to you at all. And Allah has revealed to you the Book and Wisdom [349] and taught you what you did not know [350]. And great is the grace of Allah upon you [351].”
By this is meant that if Allah Almighty had not declared the Holy Prophet ﷺ innocent, and if He had not bestowed upon him deep knowledge, then those who were misleading others would have tried to deceive him and succeeded in influencing a wrong judgment.
From this we learn that Allah Almighty protects the Holy Prophet ﷺ, therefore no one can mislead him.
A similar concept is reflected in the verse:
“And they mislead none but themselves and they perceive not...” (Surah Aal Imran, 3:69)
The splendor of Prophetic guidance shone upon the Noble Companions, making their faith unshakable. Allah made the Prophet ﷺ completely innocent and protected, and they cannot harm him in any way.
As Allah says:
“And Allah will guard you from people.” (Surah Al-Ma'idah, 5:67)
From this, we learn that both the Qur’an and the Hadith are from Allah Almighty.
The Qur’an: both words and message are from Allah.
The Hadith: the subject is divinely inspired, but the wording is from the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
From the phrase “He has taught you”, we learn that the Holy Prophet ﷺ cannot be misled, as only the ignorant can be deceived.
However, judgments are passed based on available testimony—and if the evidence is false, yet no clear refutation exists, the verdict may not reflect the hidden truth.
Additionally, this verse indicates that Allah has blessed the Prophet ﷺ with all types of knowledge of the unseen.
Allah has called the entire world as “little” in the verse:
“Say you, the enjoyment of the world is little!” (Surah An-Nisa, 4:77)
But here, Allah says: “Great is the bounty upon you.”
This shows that the entire world is merely a small portion of the vast dominion granted to the Holy Prophet ﷺ, otherwise it would not be described as a “great bounty.”
The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 113 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 110 which provides the complete commentary from verse 110 through 115.
(4:113) (O Messenger!) But for Allah’s favour and mercy upon you, a party of them had resolved to mislead you,yet they only misled them selves, and could not have harmed you in any way.[142] Allah revealed to you the Book and Wisdom, and He taught you what you knew not. Great indeed has been Allah’s favour upon you.
142. Even if some people succeeded in their design to obtain from the Prophet (peace be on him) a wrong judgement in their favour by presenting a false account of events, the real loss would have been theirs rather than the Prophet’s (peace be on him). For the real criminals in the sight of God are the perpetrators of that fraud and not the Prophet (peace be on him) who might in good faith have delivered a verdict that actually did not conform to the facts. Whoever obtains a judgement in his favour by tricking the courts deludes himself into believing that by such tricks he can bring right to his side; right remains with its true claimant regardless of judgements obtained by fraud and deception.
