📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 152 – Surah An-Nisa

"And those who believe in Allah and His Messengers and do not differentiate between any of them, to them Allah will soon give their reward [437]. And Allah is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful [438]."

[437] Rejection of Selective Belief

This verse was revealed in repudiation of the Jews (Yahud) and Christians (Nasara) who believed in some Prophets while rejecting others, especially their denial of the Prophethood of our Holy Prophet ﷺ.

  • True faith requires acceptance of all Prophets without exception.

  • Just as one cannot reject any Prophet, one must also honour all the companions and the blessed family of the Prophet ﷺ.

  • Showing love for some while harbouring enmity for others is a trait inherited from the dishonest attitude of the Yahud, and has no place in Islam.

[438] Reward Based on Sincere Faith

This part of the verse emphasizes a key spiritual truth:

  • The reward of deeds is not based merely on actions, but on sincere belief and intention.

  • Allah’s mercy and forgiveness are promised for those who combine sound belief with genuine submission to all aspects of faith.

Ibn-Kathir

Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 150 which provides the complete commentary from verse 150 through 152.

(4:152) For those who believe in Allah and His Messengers, and do not differentiate between them, We shall certainly give them their reward.[179] Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate [180]

Ala-Maududi

(4:152) For those who believe in Allah and His Messengers, and do not differentiate between them, We shall certainly give them their reward.[179] Allah is All-Forgiving, All-Compassionate [180]

179. This means that only those who acknowledge God to be their sole object of worship and their only sovereign, and who commit themselves to follow all the Prophets, will merit reward for their acts in the Hereafter. What that reward will be depends on the nature and extent of their acts of goodness. Those who do not either acknowledge the exclusive sovereignty of God or who rebelliously reject some Messengers of God and believe only in those whom they choose to, will not be rewarded, for in God’s sight their apparently good acts are essentially not valid.

180. God will be lenient and forgiving in judging the conduct of those who believe in Him and the Prophets.

(152) But they who believe in Allāh and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them - to those He is going to give their rewards. And ever is Allāh Forgiving and Merciful.
