Quran-4:140 Surah An-nisa English Translation,Transliteration and Tafsir(Tafseer).

Transliteration:( Wa qad nazzala 'alaikum fil Kitaabi an izaa sami'tum Aayaatil laahi yukfaru bihaa wa yustahza u bihaa falaa taq'udoo ma'ahum hattaa yakhoodoo fee hadeesin ghairih; innakum izam misluhum; innal laaha jaami'ul munaafiqeena wal kaafireena fee jahannama jamee'aa )

140. And indeed, He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and mocked [413], then do not sit with them until they engage in a different conversation [414]. Otherwise, you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers all together in Hell [415]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(140) And it has already come down to you in the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] that when you hear the verses of Allāh [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.[226] Indeed, Allāh will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together - (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 140

“And indeed, He has revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah being denied and mocked [413], then do not sit with them until they engage in a different conversation [414]. Otherwise, you would be like them. Indeed, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the disbelievers all together in Hell [415].”

✅ Prohibition of Being Present Where Religion Is Mocked [413]

This command applies to any setting where mockery or denial of religion takes place. A believer must:

  • Not attend such gatherings under any circumstance, or

  • If already present when irreligious behavior begins, they must leave immediately.

If one has the ability to stop such behavior, they should do so by:

  • Force, if appropriate,

  • Or by speaking out against it, thereby disassociating themselves from the blasphemy.

✅ Avoiding Participation or Passive Endorsement [414]

From this we understand that:

  • Mockery of religion,

  • Encouraging others to disbelief,

  • Or joining such gatherings, even without direct participation, are all forbidden and fall under the umbrella of infidelity.

Thus, it is prohibited to attend:

  • Gatherings of mourning that involve lamentation or curses,

  • Events where Allah's verses or religious principles are ridiculed,

Even passive attendance is sinful—unless one is present with the intention of correcting the wrong or ending the evil, in which case it is permissible.

✅ Hypocrites and Disbelievers Will Be Punished Together [415]

This verse concludes with a clear warning:
Both hypocrites and disbelievers will be gathered in Hell.

While their places in Hell may differ, as in the verse:
“Undoubtedly, the hypocrites are in the lowest section of Hell,”
they will still be gathered as a group, since their end is the same—punishment for mocking or rejecting Allah’s signs.

Thus, this verse serves as a serious reminder for believers to distance themselves from blasphemy in every form and to uphold the dignity of divine revelation at all times.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 140 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 137 which provides the complete commentary from verse 137 through 140.

(4:140) Allah has enjoined upon you in the-Book that when you hear the signs of Allah being rejected and scoffed at, you will not sit with them until they engage in some other talk, or else you will become like them.[170] Know well, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the unbe-lievers in Hell – all together.

Ala-Maududi

(4:140) Allah has enjoined upon you in the-Book that when you hear the signs of Allah being rejected and scoffed at, you will not sit with them until they engage in some other talk, or else you will become like them.[170] Know well, Allah will gather the hypocrites and the unbe-lievers in Hell – all together.

170. A person who professes Islam and yet enjoys the company of those who indulge in blasphemy against God, and who bears with equanimity their scoffing at God and His Messenger, is no different’ from the unbelievers mentioned here. For the injunction in this verse, see also (Surah Al-Anam, ayat 68) below.

(140) And it has already come down to you in the Book [i.e., the Qur’ān] that when you hear the verses of Allāh [recited], they are denied [by them] and ridiculed; so do not sit with them until they enter into another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them.[226] Indeed, Allāh will gather the hypocrites and disbelievers in Hell all together -

[226]- In this world, by participation in their blasphemy, and in the next, where you will share their punishment.
