📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 146

“But those who repented and mended (themselves) [426] and held fast to the Rope of Allah and made their religion purely for Allah. Then those are with the Muslims [427]. And soon Allah will grant a great reward for the Muslims [428].”

✅ True Repentance Requires Inner Change [426]

This refers to those who repent from hypocrisy or disbelief and genuinely reform their behavior.

From this we learn:

  • Even the worst of disbelievers or hypocrites can have their repentance accepted, provided it is sincere.

  • Repentance must be accompanied by a change in conduct—simply uttering words of repentance without transformation is meaningless and even mockery.

Real Tawbah means turning away from sin and choosing a path of obedience and sincerity.

✅ Belonging with the True Believers [427]

Those who sincerely repent, reform, and devote their religion exclusively to Allah, are counted among the true Muslims—both in this world and the Hereafter.

From this we understand the virtue of being in the company of the righteous, as Allah calls their inclusion with believers a great bounty.

Such companionship is not merely social, but a divine honor.

✅ Allah’s Reward Surpasses Imagination [428]

This part of the verse assures that Allah’s reward for the sincere and repentant believers will be immense and beyond imagination.

  • It will not be based on our limited status or deeds,

  • But will reflect the limitless grace and majesty of Allah’s generosity.

Hence, this verse is both a call to repentance and a promise of eternal companionship and divine reward for those who truly turn to Allah.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 146 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 144 which provides the complete commentary from verse 144 through 148.

(4:146) except those who re-pent and mend their ways and hold fast to Allah and make their faith exclusive to Allah.[174] Those people shall be numbered with the believers and Allah will certainly bestow on the believers a great reward.

Ala-Maududi

(4:146) except those who re-pent and mend their ways and hold fast to Allah and make their faith exclusive to Allah.[174] Those people shall be numbered with the believers and Allah will certainly bestow on the believers a great reward.

174. To make one’s faith exclusively to God means to concentrate one’s loyalties, concerns, affections, and adorations on God, and not to allow any attachments to strike such deep roots in one’s heart that one may cease to be capable of sacrificing them for His sake.

(146) Except for those who repent, correct themselves, hold fast to Allāh, and are sincere in their religion for Allāh, for those will be with the believers. And Allāh is going to give the believers a great reward.
