76. Those who believe fight in the way of Allah, and those who disbelieve[244] fight in the way of Taghut. So fight against the friends of the devil. Indeed, the plot of the devil is weak. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(76) Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt.[198] So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 76

“Those who believe fight in the way of Allah, and those who disbelieve [244] fight in the way of Taghut. So fight against the friends of the devil. Indeed, the plot of the devil is weak.”

✅ [244] Purpose Behind the Wars of Believers vs Disbelievers

This verse draws a clear distinction between the intentions behind the wars of believers and disbelievers.

  • The disbelievers fight:

    • To please the devil (Taghut)

    • To spread disbelief

    • For territorial gain or political power

In contrast, the believers fight only for the sake of Allah, to:

  • Uphold truth

  • Defend the weak

  • Gain the pleasure of their Lord

The war of kings is usually for oppression and conquest,
but the war of believers is to follow the way of Prophethood—with righteous intention and divine purpose.

The verse concludes by stating that the plot of the devil is weak. No matter how strong evil may appear, its foundation is fragile, and it will ultimately fail in the face of faith and divine guidance.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 76 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 75 which provides the complete commentary from verse 75 through 76.

(4:76) Those who have faith fight in the way of Allah, while those who disbelieve fight in the way of taghut (Satan).[105] Fight, then, against the fellows of Satan. Surely Satan’s strategy is weak.[106]

Ala-Maududi

(4:76) Those who have faith fight in the way of Allah, while those who disbelieve fight in the way of taghut (Satan).[105] Fight, then, against the fellows of Satan. Surely Satan’s strategy is weak.[106]

105. This lays down a clear verdict of God. To fight in the cause of God in order that His religion be established on earth is the task of men of faith, and whoever truly believes can never shirk this duty. To fight in the cause of taghut (authority in defiance of God) in order that the world may be governed by rebels against God is the task of unbelievers in which no believer can engage himself.

106. Satan and his comrades-in-arms ostensibly undertake tremendous preparations and contrive all kinds of ingenious machinations. True men of faith, however, should not be intimidated either by such preparations or by machinations. For, no matter what they do, they are doomed to fail.

(76) Those who believe fight in the cause of Allāh, and those who disbelieve fight in the cause of ṭāghūt.[198] So fight against the allies of Satan. Indeed, the plot of Satan has ever been weak.
