📖 Commentary (Tafsir) of Verse 151 – Surah An-Nisa

"They are the infidels [435], in truth, and We have already prepared for the infidels [436], a humiliating punishment."

[435] The Reality of Disbelief

From this verse emerge several important principles regarding the nature of kufr (infidelity):

  1. Rejection of even one Prophet is considered equal to rejecting all Prophets.
Similarly, denying a single verse of the Qur’an amounts to denying the entire Qur’an.

  2. Infidelity is absolute in quantity—there is no such thing as being a “partial infidel.”
However, there may be variations in the expression or type of disbelief:

    • Some disbelievers are cruel.

    • Others may be violent or wild by nature.
These differences relate to the quality or temperament of disbelief, not its measure.

[436] Humiliation Reserved for the Disbelievers

From this we learn a critical distinction about the Day of Judgement:

  • While sinful believers may undergo punishment,
they will not be subjected to humiliation in the same way as the disbelievers.

  • Humiliation on that day is exclusively reserved for those who deny faith.

This shows a mercy afforded to the believers—even those who sinned—that they will be spared the disgrace prepared for the enemies of faith.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 151 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 150 which provides the complete commentary from verse 150 through 152.

(4:151) It is they, indeed they, who are, beyond all doubt, unbelievers;[178] and for the unbelievers We have prepared a humiliating chastisement.

Ala-Maududi

(4:151) It is they, indeed they, who are, beyond all doubt, unbelievers;[178] and for the unbelievers We have prepared a humiliating chastisement.

178. Insofar as being an unbeliever is concerned, there is no difference between

(1) those who believe neither in God nor in the Prophets,

(2) those who believe in God but not in the Prophets, and

(3) those whobelieve in some Prophets but reject others.

(151) Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment.
