“So how (will it be) when a calamity befalls them because of what their hands have sent ahead [212]? Then they come to you swearing by Allah: ‘We intended nothing but good and reconciliation’ [213].”
This verse refers to the consequence of Bashar’s hypocrisy, who was executed by Hazrat Umar Farooq (Radiallahu Anhu) for rejecting the ruling of the Holy Prophet ﷺ.
He became destined for Hell, and when his heirs demanded compensation, it was denied, as no blood money was due in this case.
This decision was not only enforced by Hazrat Umar but was also approved by Allah Almighty—a clear affirmation of Umar’s judgment and a condemnation of hypocrisy.
After the execution, Bashar’s heirs tried to cover up his hypocrisy. They came to the Prophet ﷺ, swearing by Allah, and claimed that:
Bashar meant no harm
He was only trying to promote unity and peace
He wanted to refer the matter to Ka'b bin Ashraf for the sake of reconciliation
However, this was merely a fabricated excuse—his true motive was to evade the Prophet’s ruling, which revealed his disbelief and treachery.
The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 62 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 60 which provides the complete commentary from verse 60 through 63.
(4:62) But what happens when some misfortune visits them because of their own misdeeds? Then, they come to you swearing by Allah,[93] saying: We wanted nothing but to do good and to bring about conciliation (between the two parties)’.
93. This may mean that when Muslims become aware of their hypocritical activities and they feel afraid of being caught, censured, and eventually punished, the hypocrites resort to every stratagem, including oaths, in order to assure people that they are true believers.
