📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 61

“And when it is said to them: ‘Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger,’ you will see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion [211].”

✅ [211] Preferring Foreign Law Over Islam – A Mark of Hypocrisy

This verse highlights the true nature of the hypocrites—those who claim belief, but when invited to resolve matters by Allah’s revelation and the judgment of the Holy Prophet ﷺ, they turn away in aversion.

This attitude exposes their disbelief cloaked in pretense.

From this we learn:

In the presence of Islamic law and authority, choosing foreign systems like American or British laws over divine Shariah is the peak of hypocrisy.

To reject or bypass the rulings of the Qur’an and the Sunnah in favor of man-made systems reflects a rejection of divine guidance, and is a clear sign of hypocrisy.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 61 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 60 which provides the complete commentary from verse 60 through 63.

(4:61) When they are told: ‘Come to that which Allah has revealed, and come to the Messenger’, you will notice the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.[92]

Ala-Maududi

(4:61) When they are told: ‘Come to that which Allah has revealed, and come to the Messenger’, you will notice the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.[92]

92. This shows that the hypocrites were inclined to refer to the Prophet (peace be on him) those cases in which they expected a favourable decision. When they feared an adverse judgement they refused to refer to the Prophet (peace be on him). This continues to be the practice of many hypocrites even now. Whenever they feel that Islamic Law would further their interests they turn to it but when they feel it would militate against them they refer their disputes to whichever legal systems and courts of law, customs and usages they anticipate most likely to give them a favourable decision.

(61) And when it is said to them, "Come to what Allāh has revealed and to the Messenger," you see the hypocrites turning away from you in aversion.
