114. There is no good in most of their secret conferences, but whoso commands charity and kindness or makes peace among people [352]. And whoso does this for seeking the pleasure [353] of Allah; We shall soon give him a great reward. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(114) No good is there in much of their private conversation, except for those who enjoin charity or that which is right or conciliation between people. And whoever does that seeking means to the approval of Allāh - then We are going to give him a great reward. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah An-Nisa – Verse 114

“There is no good in most of their secret conferences, but whoso commands charity and kindness or makes peace among people [352]. And whoso does this for seeking the pleasure [353] of Allah; We shall soon give him a great reward.”

✅ The Value of Purposeful Consultation [352]

This verse includes all forms of private discussions—whether in state conferences, parliamentary meetings, tribal councils, or even family consultations.

If such gatherings are held for beneficial purposes, such as charity, virtue, or reconciliation, then they are praiseworthy. Otherwise, such secretive meetings are of no good and may lead to corruption or harm.

✅ Reconciliation for the Sake of Allah [353]

By this, we understand that resolving conflicts—whether between husband and wife, father and son, friends, relatives, neighbors, or even entire cities or nations—is a great act of worship, if done to seek Allah’s pleasure.

If “people” refers to Muslims, it means working to restore harmony among them.

If it refers to all of humanity, then it implies:

  • Encouraging non-Muslims to accept Islam, bringing peace between them and Muslims.

  • In case of impending war between Muslim and non-Muslim states, if peace favors Muslims, efforts should be made to negotiate peace.

Such actions earn divine reward, as Allah permits and values peacemaking, even with disbelievers.

As stated in the Qur'an:
“And if they incline towards peace, then incline you also and put trust in Allah.” (Surah Al-Anfal, 8:61)
