Transliteration:( Mai yashfa' shafaa'atan hasanatay yakul lahoo naseebum minhaa wa mai yashfa' shafaa'atan saiyi'atany-yakul lahoo kiflum minhaa; wa kaanal laahu 'alaa kulli shai'im Muqeetaa )
“Whosoever makes a good intercession, there is a share [270] in it for him, and whosoever makes an evil intercession, there is a share [271] in it for him. And Allah has power over everything.”
From this we learn that:
Making a good intercession—such as helping someone in difficulty or supporting a just cause—is an act of virtue and worthy of reward.
Interceding to protect the innocent, or assist someone rightfully, brings divine reward to the intercessor.
In contrast:
Interceding on behalf of a tyrant, or to aid in injustice or oppression, is strictly forbidden.
Such intercession supports falsehood, and therefore becomes a sinful act in itself.
This verse also teaches that:
It is not only sinful to commit a wrong act,
but also to encourage, advise, or create desire in others to sin is equally blameworthy.
Similarly, promoting righteousness and virtue—even if one doesn't directly act—earns reward, just as promoting sin incurs guilt.
Allah concludes this verse by reminding:
“And Allah has power over everything”—He is fully aware of all intentions, actions, and outcomes, and He alone will judge accordingly.
The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 85 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 84 which provides the complete commentary from verse 84 through 87.
(4:85) He who intercedes in a good cause shall share in its good result, and he who intercedes in an evil cause shall share in its burden.[113] Allah watches over everything.
113. It is all a matter of choice and luck. One has the opportunity to struggle for the cause of God, and to urge others to strive for it in order to raise the banner of the Truth and be rewarded by God for so doing. Likewise, one also has the opportunity to expend one’s energy trying to create misunderstanding among God’s creatures and to demoralize people in their struggle for His cause thus incurring His chastisement.
