Transliteration:( Wa likullin ja'alnaa ma waaliya mimmaa tarakal waalidaani wal aqraboon; wallazeena 'aqadat aimaanukum fa aatoohum naseebahum; innal laaha kaana 'alaa kulli shai'in Shaheedaa )
"And do not long for that by which Allah has made some of you excel over others [122]. For men, it is a share of what they have earned [123], and for women is a share of what they have earned [124]. And ask Allah for His Grace [125]. Surely, Allah has knowledge of all things [126]."
From this, we learn:
Envy (hasad) is forbidden and is considered one of the roots of all sins.
It was envy that led to the downfall of the Devil (Iblis).
Envy means:
To burn in jealousy,
To wish ill for someone enjoying a blessing,
And to desire that blessing for oneself.
However, ghibta (a positive form of envy), is permissible when:
It relates to religious blessings,
And one wishes to also attain such blessings without desiring the other to lose it.
Every person, regardless of relationship, must earn reward through personal good deeds.
A pious wife or pious husband cannot replace the effort required from the other.
Each has their own share based on their own deeds and responsibilities.
This verse was revealed in response to Hazrat Umm Salma (رضي الله عنها), who wished:
“If we were men, we would have participated in jihad (holy war).”
Allah answered that:
Every person has their own divinely assigned role.
A woman can attain the reward of jihad by faithfully fulfilling her domestic duties,
especially by maintaining purdah and care of the household.
From this, we learn:
Each gender’s duties are distinct,
And reward comes through fulfilling one's own obligations, not wishing for others' roles.
If Allah wills to grant His Grace, He can:
Multiply reward,
And give greater blessings even for small deeds.
Thus:
One must constantly seek Allah’s Grace in du'a (supplication),
For no success or spiritual rank is possible without His Mercy.
Allah’s Grace is comprehensive—it covers worldly and spiritual blessings.
Everything Allah bestows upon His servants is with:
Full knowledge,
Perfect wisdom,
And absolute fairness.
So when someone feels jealous of another’s blessings, they are in fact objecting to:
Allah’s decision,
His choice, and
His distribution of favors.
The tafsir of Surah Nisa verse 33 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Nisa ayat 32 which provides the complete commentary from verse 32 through 33.
(4:33) And to everyone We have appointed rightful heirs to what the parents and near of kin might leave behind. As to those with whom you have made a solemn covenant, give them their share. Allah watches over all things.[55]
55. According to Arab customary law, those who concluded compacts of alliance and friendship also became mutual heirs. Likewise, an adopted son inherited from his foster-father. While abrogating this customary law, this verse reveals that inheritance goes to one’s kin according to the rules for the distribution of inheritance laid down by God Himself. However, if a man has made commitments to people, he has the right to give away to them whatever he wishes during his lifetime.
[181]- By bequest, as only those relatives mentioned in verses 11 and 12 inherit fixed shares.
