“And when any sign comes to them, they say: ‘We shall never believe until we are given the like of what the Messengers of Allah have received’ [275]. Allah knows well where to place His message [276]. Soon, the wrongdoers will face disgrace before Allah and a severe punishment for their plotting [277].”
Prophethood is purely Allah’s choice—not earned through deeds, wealth, or social status. Just as a jewel is kept in a special case, Allah selects the most suitable chest for His message. It is forbidden to desire prophethood, as it’s impossible to attain by effort, just like no one can be a partner to Allah. The final seal of prophethood has already been placed.
This verse was revealed in response to Walid bin Mughira, who claimed he deserved prophethood more than the Prophet ﷺ due to his wealth and status. Allah replied that He alone decides where to place revelation and miracles—not based on worldly merit.
Those who plot against the prophets are eventually disgraced and punished. This truth has been repeatedly seen throughout history. On the contrary, serving the religion of Allah earns respect both in this world and the Hereafter.
The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 124 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 123 which provides the complete commentary from verse 123 through 124.
(6:124) Whenever there comes to them a sign from Allah, they say: ‘We will not believe until we are given what was given to the Messengers of Allah.’[91] Allah knows best where to place His message. Soon shall these wicked ones meet with humiliation and severe chastigement from Allah for all their evil plotting.
91. This shows that they were unwilling to believe in the statement of the Prophets that an angel of God came to each of them and delivered the message of God. They would believe, they said, only if the angel approached them directly and intimated God’s message to them.
