59. And with Him are the keys of the unseen. Only He knows [119] them. And He knows whatever is in the land and in the sea. And the leaf that falls, He knows it. Neither a grain is there in the darkness of the earth nor anything green or dry [120], which is not written in the Luminous Book [121]. (Kanzul Imaan Translation)

(59) And with Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them except Him. And He knows what is on the land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but that He knows it. And no grain is there within the darknesses of the earth and no moist or dry [thing] but that it is [written] in a clear record. (Saheen International Translation)

📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 59

"And with Him are the keys of the unseen. Only He knows [119] them. And He knows whatever is in the land and in the sea. And the leaf that falls, He knows it. Neither a grain is there in the darkness of the earth nor anything green or dry [120], which is not written in the Luminous Book [121]."

✅ Exclusive Ownership, Not Denial of Bestowal [119]

This verse does not negate the Prophet’s ﷺ knowledge of the unseen, but affirms that such knowledge originates only with Allah. The Holy Prophet ﷺ receives from it what Allah wills to grant. Using this verse to deny all unseen knowledge would also apply to those who themselves have partial knowledge through divine permission. The “keys” of the unseen refer to five core knowledges mentioned in Surah Luqmān (31:34), which open access to countless hidden realities.

✅ Everything Is Known and Preserved [120]

Every creation—dry or green, seen or buried, even a single falling leaf—is known by Allah and recorded. This recording in the Divine Tablet (Lawh Mahfūz) is not due to any fear of forgetfulness, but serves to inform Allah’s chosen servants. These servants do not acquire knowledge through logic or deduction, but through divine vision and bestowal.

✅ The Luminous Book and Those Permitted to See It [121]

The Lawh Mahfūz is called the “Luminous Book” because it radiates knowledge of the unseen to those granted permission to witness it—such as angels, prophets, and saints. If it were visible to all, it would not be described as “luminous”. As Hazrat Rūmī said: “The Divine Tablet is in the vision of the saints; whatever is hidden is protected from all.”
