📖 Commentary of Surah Al-An’aam – Verse 28

"But it has become clear to them what they used to conceal [53] before. And if they were sent back, they would do the same from which they were forbidden. And surely, they are liars." [54]

✅ Exposure of Hidden Polytheism [53]

On the Day of Judgement, when the disbelievers are asked, “Where are your gods?”, they will take false oaths, claiming they were not polytheists. In an attempt to hide their shirk, they will deny it altogether. But at that moment, their own limbs will testify against them. They will then be forced to admit the truth. This verse addresses their futile attempts to conceal what they once practiced openly. (Khazainul Irfaan)

✅ The Nature of Habitual Falsehood [54]

Even if they were sent back to the world, they would repeat their crimes, because lying and denial have become part of their nature. Just as a habitual criminal cannot stay away from wrongdoing, these disbelievers would return to infidelity despite their promises. Hence, their punishment is justified, not excessive—it matches the depth of their corruption, and reflects the eternity of Hell for such incorrigible souls.

Ibn-Kathir

The tafsir of Surah Al-Anam verse 28 by Ibn Kathir is unavailable here.
Please refer to Surah Anam ayat 27 which provides the complete commentary from verse 27 through 30.

(6:28) No! They will say this merely because the Truth which they had concealed will become obvious to them;[19] or else if they were sent back, they would still revert to what was forbidden to them. (So this plea of theirs would be a lie too) for they are just liars.

Ala-Maududi

(6:28) No! They will say this merely because the Truth which they had concealed will become obvious to them;[19] or else if they were sent back, they would still revert to what was forbidden to them. (So this plea of theirs would be a lie too) for they are just liars.

19. At that moment such a statement on their part would not be indicative of either any true change of heart or of any genuinely revised judgement based on serious reflection and reasoning. It would rather be the result of direct observation of reality at a time when even the staunchest unbeliever would find it impossible to deny it.

(28) But what they concealed before has [now] appeared to them. And even if they were returned, they would return to that which they were forbidden; and indeed, they are liars.
